After reaching the 1 billion downloads milestone, it seems Rovio is ready to move on to their next challenge outside of the Angry Birds franchise. Though the company was made a household name in the mobile gaming world with the loveable feathered few, they’ve produced more than 20 other titles for a variety of platforms including everyone’s favorite flop, the N-Gage.
The new game is titled Amazing Alex – about a curious young boy who loves to build things. He’s entirely based on an existing intellectual property called Casey’s Contraptions, which Rovio recently purchased. The title was actually a Rube Goldberg device building game which inspired a lot of creativity. For those who don’t know, a Rube Goldberg device is an overly-complex and extravagant machine that, through a series of complicated mechanics, completes an astoundingly simple task.
You can take a look at Casey’s Contraptions – the basis for Rovio’s new title – here:
Speaking on a Finnish Breakfast show this morning, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed revealed that the game will have an educational element to it. Seeing as it is based off of a Rube Goldberg creating game, it seems relatively safe to harbor a guess that Amazing Alex will bring us more of the same, but with a number of improvements from the high-profile application developer. Hed acknowledged the pressures of producing the game, but seemed very optimistic about the challenge:
The quality pressure is high. We want to maintain the high standard Angry Birds fans have come to enjoy.
After such massive success on the mobile application market, Rovio certainly doesn’t have to worry about funding for their new game. However, it’s evident that fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if Rovio can make a successful follow-up to the Angry Birds franchise – a task with admittingly gigantic shoes to fill. We’ll let you know when more information about Amazing Alex is revealed – in fact the storyline is set to be unveiled “soon.”
Amazing Alex is expected to be released in July this year.
