EA revealed the top 100 players in the upcoming FIFA 21 soccer simulation game yesterday. Familiar faces such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar Jr, top the list for consecutive years, while other players have not been too satisfied with their overall rating. Every year, the FIFA top 100 stirs up controversy and this year is no different with players voicing their frustration with EA.

Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku is not very happy with his FIFA 21 rating, going as far as accusing EA Sports of messing with ratings for publicity. Lukaku has previously spoken out against EA after being omitted from certain Ultimate Team packs and receiving an 85 overall in FIFA 20, two whole rating points down from the previous year. While Lukaku did struggle during his final season in Manchester, Lukaku returned to excellent form in his first season with Milan.

Romelu Lukaku netted 23 goals in 36 appearance in Series A, almost doubling his scoring performance the previous year. Despite a massive improvement, Lukaku received the exact same rating in FIFA 21. Lukaku is not the only elite player to find his rating absurd.

Arsenal leader Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was also given a slight downgrade, despite being the second top scorer in Premier League and securing a FA Cup victory. Instead of accusing EA of messing with ratings to get a rise out of players, the Arsenal forward just responded by posting his rating with a great deal of laughing emojis. Despite FIFA 20 being one of the most played games ever, many fans and athletes alike do not hold back their disappointment with the franchise.

EA has always been under fire for ratings in its sports games, drawing criticism from fans and athletes alike. While fans and athletes may be biased towards ratings, the Ultimate Team system presents even more problems due to the continuous release of player cards with different ratings throughout the year. Many fans have even called for a boycott of FIFA 21, believing that EA would do nothing to fix the community complaints.

Players have been so outraged with the Ultimate Team system that it has led to a class-action lawsuit against EA for Ultimate Team packs being a form of gambling. EA has removed the controversial fitness items, staff coaches and training items, the infamous Ultimate Team packs remain in FIFA 21. While FIFA, Madden, and 2K all still have Ultimate Team features in their latest installments, EA notably removed Ultimate Team from the new UFC 4.

FIFA 21 releases on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One on October 9, with support for PS5 and Xbox Series X planned.
