With its vicious cycle of backtracking, Rogue Legacy 2 has a lot to offer after the first run. In fact, the game’s “True Ending” only unlocks only after the seventh NG+, meaning that players will have to sink quite a bit of time into the game in order to unlock it.

Thankfully, Rogue Legacy 2 has some of the best lore in the roguelike genre, so this never feels like too much of a grind. That said, those hoping to unlock the secret ending in Rogue Legacy 2 will have to jump through one or two hoops before they can do so.

How to Get the True Ending in Rogue Legacy 2

To get the True Ending in Rogue Legacy 2, players will need to equip the prime boss Burdens and beat all eight in one run. Since each new thread grants only one Burden, players need to beat at least 7 NG+ runs before activating the secret cutscene.

Burdens are extra challenges that intensify NG+, and when toggled on in NG+7, they summon prime versions of Estuaries. Players who then beat all these ultimate bosses get to see an alternative cutscene featuring a beloved character.

For those who’re unfamiliar with the post-game in Rogue Legacy 2, New Game Plus starts upon interacting with Elpis, Bearer of Hope. She shows up after the first successful run and controls the threads.

What Is the Achievement for Getting the True Ending?

Completing Rogue Legacy 2 and unlocking the secret ending gives players the achievement called “Had to Do It.” The achievement’s description says, “See the Title Drop,” which pops up once the True Ending is achieved.

If the achievement is not granted after the True Ending, players may need to befriend Ladon, the Dragon, and try again.

What Happens in Rogue Legacy 2’s True Ending?

After beating all the prime Estuaries, the game’s ending changes. This time, Ladon, the Dragon, saves Jonah and reunites him with Maria, the Pizza Girl. It’s also revealed that Maria is actually Z, a mysterious character mentioned only in memories.

Do You Need the Mysterious Key for the True Ending?

Technically, players do need the Mysterious Key to achieve 100% completion in Rogue Legacy 2. However, the key is not a part of the True Ending. Curious players can still use it, though, to get secret memories and lore. For that, they must defeat Jonah, head back to the tutorial area, and jump on the snowy roof to the left. That’s where they'll find the Mysterious Key’s door, right under the campfire.

Rogue Legacy 2 is available now for Xbox, Switch, and PC.
