Cellar Door Games developed Rogue Legacy 2 with the intention of providing a difficult but rewarding platformer that heavily featured a roguelike experience. Rogue Legacy 2 offers various classes for players to choose from and each comes with its own specific set of weapons and skills.

In addition to those, each new heir in the lineage can be born with random traits that also affect gameplay. Some of them positively impact the experience, while others offer bonus gold and rewards in exchange for ramping up the difficulty of the run.

8 Perfectionist

Rogue Legacy 2 Traits Perfectionist

The Perfectionist trait is interesting because its burden and effectiveness are completely reliant on the class it is attached to. The trait itself states that only spin kicks and skill crits deal damage. For classes like the Barbarian where all ground attacks are skill crits, that means that the 50 percent gold increase from Perfectionist feels like a bonus, instead of the hindrance it's intended to be.

That's why Perfectionist is not one of the hardest traits in Rogue Legacy 2 as it is simply a victim of circumstance. If that wasn't the case, there'd likely be a spot for it much higher up in this ranking.

7 Hero Complex

Rogue Legacy 2 Traits Hero Complex

Rogue Legacy 2's collection of traits works so well because some of the more difficult ones in the early game tend to become more appealing, or at the very least less annoying, as the player gets more comfortable and skilled at the game. Hero Complex provides 100 percent more health, but the player can never heal.

In the early stages of Rogue Legacy 2, this trait feels like a death wish, but once the combat starts to feel fluid and manageable, the extra health is a lot more tempting. The added benefit of locking worlds and knowing the path could also make the idea of set health a lot more welcoming to players of varying experience levels.

6 Alexithymia

Rogue Legacy 2 Traits Alexithymia

At first glance, it may seem as though the trait Alexithymia wouldn't be too tough to deal with considering the point of the game is to eliminate enemies. In reality, not knowing the health of foes drastically changes combat strategy and can make boss fights feel as if they're going on forever.

The 50 percent gold increase provided by Alexithymia is nice, but only if the person playing is confident in their skills and doesn't need the reassurance that victory is within their grasp. One could argue that not knowing a boss's health helps the player focus on reading move patterns and can alternatively make the enemy easier to defeat.

5 Pacifist

Rogue Legacy 2 Traits Pacifist

There are often discussions in mainstream media about games being too violent, but Cellar Door Games pokes fun at this notion with a trait called Pacifist. It makes it so the player can't deal damage, and though that feels like enough of a hindrance by itself, it also knocks the player for 60 percent of their health.

With this trait, the player will spawn holding a peace sign that looks to pack a mean amount of damage but simply doesn't do anything except promote a less violent future for the world of Rogue Legacy 2.

4 FND/Stressed

Rogue Legacy 2 Traits FND Stressed

While playing Rogue Legacy 2, most players will retaliate after taking damage with a flurry of attacks in hopes of vanquishing said damage dealer. FND/Stressed is a trait that disarms the player when they take damage, preventing them from attacking or using spells for a whole two seconds.

Spin kicks are still available to the player, but lacking the ability to dole out damage after taking a hit gets rather frustrating. If a 50 percent gold bonus sounds like a reasonable trade-off, then the best Rogue Legacy 2 players might want to consider this trait since they simply don't take damage.

3 Panic Attacks

Rogue Legacy 2 Traits Panic Attacks

Visual communication is a big part of the overall gaming experience, as it helps immerse the player in the world and provides clear feedback on how that person is interacting with the said world. The Panic Attacks trait punishes the player for getting hit by darkening the entirety of the screen.

This means that Rogue Legacy 2's boss fights exponentially increase in difficulty as the damage can quickly accumulate as the dark provides a tremendous advantage to the programmed enemies. Exploring room by room won't become too hard, but as the difficulty increases and more enemies group spawn in larger areas, things can and will quickly get out of hand.

2 C.I.P.

Rogue Legacy 2 Traits CIP

Earlier the trait called Alexithymia was discussed, which removes the health bar of all enemies. The trait called C.I.P. functions the same way, but for the player's health instead. It's one thing to not know when the enemy is almost dead, but it is something else entirely when it's unclear if death is a single blow away from happening.

Add on to this that the gold bonus is just 25 percent and it's hard to justify C.I.P. being worth dealing with in any capacity.

1 One-Hit Wonder/Fragile

Rogue Legacy 2 Traits One Hit Wonder

Sometimes Rogue Legacy 2 players are simply looking to gather gold to purchase upgrades or buy new armor and weapons. A 200 percent gold increase like the one the trait One-Hit Wonder/Fragile provides is perfect for this predicament, but any other time it's a tough gamble to make.

The average player won't make it very far if they can only be hit once, so it's important that unless the plan is to do a gold run then picking a different heir regardless of the downside is the much better decision.

Rogue Legacy 2 is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
