Ever since Rocksteady Studios released Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015, fans have been wondering about what's next from the critically-acclaimed studio. Many assumed that Rocksteady would be working on a Superman video game, or maybe even another Batman: Arkham game, but it's finally been announced that Rocksteady Studios has been developing a Suicide Squad video game, with more news to come later this month.

Rocksteady made the announcement on Twitter, sharing an image of Superman with a Suicide Squad logo on his head in the shape of a target. This seems to imply that the Suicide Squad game will be about the titular squad attempting to kill Superman, though it's possible their ambition will extend to the entire Justice League. Previously, leaks and rumors suggested that the subtitle for the Suicide Squad game would be Kill the Justice League, so maybe players will face off against many other famous DC heroes throughout the game.

Unfortunately, Rocksteady stopped short of providing any other details about the game, except that more information will come on August 22 at the DC FanDome event. It's also expected that fans will get more information on the upcoming James Gunn-directed Suicide Squad movie at DC FanDome as well, so fans of the villainous group should have plenty to look forward to come August 22.

Meanwhile, the Suicide Squad game may not be the only video game announced at DC FanDome on August 22. It's also been heavily teased that WB Games Montreal will be revealing its new project at the event as well. With Rocksteady working on Suicide Squad, it's expected that WB Games Montreal has been working on the next Batman: Arkham game, with the general consensus being that the game is going to be about the Bat Family taking on the Court of Owls.

In the meantime, it will be interesting to see which platforms these games launch for. Rocksteady has presumably been working on the Suicide Squad game for at least five years, so one has to imagine that it is pretty close to the end of its development cycle. If fans are lucky, maybe they'll even get to play it by the end of the year. Then again, maybe Rocksteady and Warner Bros. Interactive decided to re-tool the Suicide Squad game for the PS5 and Xbox Series X instead, which could potentially push it back to next year. Development complications from world events like the coronavirus pandemic may also potentially cause the game to be delayed.

However, all of this is just speculation at this time. Fans will learn more about the Suicide Squad game from Rocksteady Studios come August 22 at DC FanDome.

Suicide Squad is in development for unspecified platforms.
