Rockstar Games has updated its policies to bring clarification about its stand regarding GTA Online RP servers. While the company allows such servers to exist on Grand Theft Auto Online, it draws a line as to what kind of activity they can perform and their revenue model.

Ever since its original release in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 offered players the opportunity to create their own character in the online multiplayer mode. Overtime, some players took this occasion to launch dedicated roleplaying servers, where instead of playing the main characters of GTA 5, anyone can become whoever they want in Los Santos. Players can choose from dozens of available GTA Online RP servers, but the most popular ones have a limited number of spots open.

To better regulate these role playing activities, Rockstar Games updated its policy regarding GTA Online RP servers. While the company stated that they support RP servers and wish to see them continue to thrive, it brings a number of restrictions to prevent third-party users to make money off of Grand Theft Auto 5. Take-Two’s legal enforcement policy is now aligned with GTA’s PC single-player mods policy, with priority in enforcement actions focused on the misuse of existing trademarks and brands as well as any commercial exploitation that could benefit from using Rockstar Games’ online services.

More specifically, Rockstar Games prevents any GTA Online RP server to import or misuse any of its trademarks or games, as well as any other real-life brands, characters, or music. GTA Online RP servers must not interfere with the official multiplayer or online services provided by Rockstar, nor can they offer new games, stories, missions, or maps. Moreover, the owners of GTA Online RP servers have the interdiction to sell any kind of service, including the sale of loot boxes for real-world or in-game currencies, the use of cryptocurrencies or NFTs, or any other form of commercial exploitation that could generate revenue with sponsorships.

While this change in policies regarding GTA Online RP won’t change much for most players, some server owners will no longer be able to make money off of Rockstar’s game. Last October, rapper Lil Durk launched a series of “Trenches Pass” and NFTs for his GTA Online RP server which will no longer be legal, as Rockstar forbids any kind of commercial exploitation using their game. The third-party multiplayer system FiveM should remain available and keep on providing GTA Online RP enthusiasts with custom servers such as NoPixel. However, they may need to remove custom maps and the monthly subscription option if they want to stay away from Rockstar’s radars.

Grand Theft Auto Online is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
