Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starring as Teth-Adam in Black Adam is a dream come true for many DC Comics fans. After all, the Rock fits Black Adam's physique, and his acting charm may fit Teth-Adam's own proud yet stern nature. And while the upcoming DC Universe film finally stars Black Adam in his own story, a lot of fans may still simply associate him with Billy Batson, or Shazam.

Thankfully, Teth-Adam has received his fair share of personal stories that explored various aspects of his life. While he started as the archnemesis of Captain Marvel, Black Adam eventually gets redefined as a Justice League villain and, eventually, an antihero. What else should fans know about this other bearer of Shazam's powers?

10 Success Story Gone Wrong

Wrong Success Stories - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

Contrary to popular belief, Captain Marvel is the second successor of the Wizard Shazam, not the first. In fact, Shazam chose Teth-Adam as his original successor due to his purity of mind. Being empowered with the Wizard's abilities, Teth-Adam became the Mighty Adam. Unfortunately, he becomes corrupted by his powers. As punishment, Shazam renames him into Black Adam and banishes him to the far edges of the universe.

This origin story changes throughout the years, but the foundation remains the same. One Teth-Adam will become Shazam's successor, only to grow corrupted by his power. As punishment, he either becomes banished or killed, only to return to the present.

9 Different Times, Different Gods

Different Times Different Gods - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

While Black Adam originally had the same powerset from Greco-Roman deities, slight retcons changed this into powers from Ancient Egyptian Gods. This change made sense, given how Teth-Adam lived during the era of Ancient Egypt. As a result, Shazam did have Teth-Adam use "Shazam" as his magic word. However, each letter now corresponded to a completely new deity.

In the case of Teth-Adam, his Black Adam transformation grants him the stamina of Shu, the swiftness of Horus, and the strength of Amon. Moreover, he possesses the wisdom of Zehuti, the power of Aten, and the courage of Mehen.

8 Taps Into An Overpowered Powerset

WW3 Black Adam - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

To say that Black Adam is just an evil analog of Captain Marvel and Superman is a grave understatement. Given the magical nature of his abilities, Black Adam can use his godly blessings in extremely creative and powerful ways. It's thanks to Zehuti's wisdom that Black Adam possesses an insane amount of scholarly knowledge. On top of this, Shu's stamina alone makes Black Adam technically immortal. Moreover, Black Adam can boost Golden Age Flash's speed thanks to the speed of Horus.

Additionally, his sheer super strength can potentially outmatch both Superman's and Captain Marvel's, as he can take on entire squads of superheroes on his own. This means he may even fight the likes of Darkseid, given the chance. He can use Aten's power to weaponize his lightning bolt and gain magical defenses, while Mehen's courage gives him some degree of telepathic protection.

7 The Case Of Two Personalities

Two Personalities - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

In a revised origin, Shazam seals Black Adam's powers into a scarab, which kills Teth-Adam's depowered body. While Shazam took centuries before accepting a new champion (Billy Batson), an archeologist named Theo Adam stumbles upon the aforementioned scarab in a tomb and kills his bosses, Billy's parents, to take it for himself. Believing he is the reincarnation of Teth-Adam, Theo speaks "Shazam" and transforms into Black Adam.

At a surprising turn of events, Black Adam is acquitted for the murder of the Batsons, as his fingerprints are different from Theo Adam's. It's revealed that Black Adam and the host Theo Adam are separate personalities. Moreover, Black Adam continuously fights the influence of his host to do evil.

6 The Protector Of Kahndaq

Kahndaq - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

Interestingly, Black Adam received a slight "reboot" in his stay with the Justice Society of America. Instead of hailing from Ancient Egypt, Teth-Adam instead comes from the fictional nation of Kahndaq in North Africa. Formerly serving under Prince Khufu, Adam swore vengeance when Kahndaq is conquered and his family is killed in the process. Back then, these tragedies are due to a villain named Ahk-ton, who worked with the immortal Vandal Savage, one of the most notorious villains in the DC Universe.

As the Mighty Adam, Teth-Adam kills Ahk-ton and forcefully reclaims Kahndaq. It's because of these actions that Shazam reclaims his powers. In the present, Black Adam retains his old-fashioned ideals of justice. As a result, while he gains the respect of many JSA members, many also doubt his reformation - especially Captain Marvel.

5 The Black Marvel Family

Black Adam Family - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

Whereas Captain Marvel has his Marvel Family, Black Adam eventually had his own Black Marvel Family as well. While not as expansive as Captain Marvel's, Black Adam does receive his fair share of similarly-powered companions. The first and most prominent member of his Family is Isis, known as Adrianna Tomaz, who was once an Egyptian slave that Black Adam accepted into his inner circle.

When Black Adam and Captain Marvel tinker with a magical amulet, Adrianna becomes Isis. Meanwhile, Black Adam imparts a portion of his powers to Adrianna's younger brother Amon to save him from an injury, transforming him into Osiris. Osiris wears a derivative of Black Adam's signature costume. Meanwhile, Isis had a more Ancient Egyptian aesthetic with her appearance.

Sadly, this first version of the Black Marvel Family doesn't last long when Isis and Orisis meet untimely demises. Moreover, Mary Marvel will become a temporary member of the team after Black Adam gives his powers to her in the future.

4 Not Entirely Evil After All

Osiris - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

When Black Adam forms his own Black Adam family, they start getting more involved in the affairs of other DC Universe teams. It's here that Black Adam shows more complex aspects of his personality. For instance, it's Isis's influence that helped Black Adam become more humanitarian in his approach to ruling.

Meanwhile, Black Adam also faces a moral crisis with Orisis. At some point, Osiris begs him to claim his powers back after having accidentally killed a person in a Teen Titans mission.

3 The Chocolate Egg Cream Incident

Chocolate Egg Cream - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

Funnily enough, one of the most prolonged instances of Black Adam being depowered involves Captain Marvel "taking back" his abilities during his rampage around the world. In a short miniseries, a depowered Black Adam tries everything in his power to revive Isis and restore his powers, to no avail. In fact, he spends his free time trying to recite names of emotions, moods, locations, signs, and streets just to "stumble" upon Billy's assigned new word.

When all hope seemed lost, Teth-Adam orders a chocolate egg cream in a malt shop. This transforms him back to Black Adam, with Teth-Adam realizing that this dish became his new magic word. Interestingly, Black Adam finds a depowered Mary Marvel and gives his powers to her - hoping this act could help Isis get resurrected but to no avail.

2 Not Immune To Being Depowered

Not immune to depowered - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

Inasmuch as Black Adam can match the likes of Captain Marvel and Superman, he's not immune to being depowered. Granted, Shazam usually took Black Adam's powers to save the world from his fury. However, his own rivals such as Captain Marvel used the nature of their powers against him. For instance, the comedic Uncle Marvel often devises ploys to have Black Adam say "Shazam" to transform back into Teth-Adam and lose his powers.

Moreover, multiple plots against Black Adam also involve gagging him, restraining his ability to speak, or just outright depowering him. After all, the rapid aging from being depowered will likely kill him in the process.

1 A Member Of The Council Of Immortals

Council of Immortals - Black Adam DC Comics Trivia

In the Dark Nights: Metal miniseries, Black Adam alongside some of the oldest members of the DC Universe form the Council of the Immortals. It's unknown what the Council actually does, but they do have members such as the immortal Vandal Savage and Hawkgirl.

His membership in this council makes sense, given his complicated history with the Wizard Shazam. Whereas other heroes and villains liberally receive reboots, characters like Black Adam almost always have to stay old due to their association with other characters. Moreover, in this miniseries, Black Adam helps Shazam and Captain Marvel restore peace in the extradimensional realm of the Magiclands.

It's in this miniseries that others note that Black Adam may still get a full redemption after all.
