Those that somehow haven't had a chance to play Rocket League are in luck. Not only is Rocket League going free-to-play in the fall, but Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 players won't need to subscribe to either console's online service to play online.

Earlier in the year it was announced by developer Psyonix that Rocket League would be going through some major changes come the fall. In addition to going free-to-play, the game would see significant changes to its seasonal content, competitive ranking, and the addition of a new player experience for the plethora of new players likely to try the game with no price barrier.

Competitive ranking will see the biggest change with the addition of Competitive Ranking Tournaments. The new mode will pit similarly skilled teams against each other with numerous tournaments being held throughout each day in each region, helping the wait times for players looking to play a game.

Rocket League continues to be incredibly popular online since its release in 2015. After a short term of exclusivity on the PC and PS4, Psyonix brought the game over to the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, being one of the first current gen games to allow cross play between the platforms. The game continues to see a high number of players playing online competitively, hitting a new peak player record earlier this year with a total of close to 500,000 active players across all available platforms.

The game has become so popular that Rocket League's competitive Esport began to air on BBC, earlier in the year. BBC aired the European portion of the Rocket League Spring Series live on the BBC Sport website and BBC iPlayer. The airing of the tournament came just after Covid-19 restrictions began to take place, which have kept millions of people home across the globe, making it a great opportunity for exposure for the game and Esports in general.

Releasing in a similar manner, Fall Guys, which released last month free for PlayStation Plus subscribers, is hoping to achieve a similar success launching in the same manner that Rocket League did on the Sony console. In a Reddit AMA following the game's launch, Fall Guys developer Mediatonic, voiced interest in getting the game in as many players hands as possible through the subscription service and providing codes to lucky fans on Twitter. Currently, Fall Guys has hit its own stride with a massive amount of players joining in games and causing server issues during the games initial launch.

Rocket League is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One
