Cross-platform play is a logical next step for the games industry, allowing gamers to play together regardless of their chosen platform. Fortnite was the first game to support cross-play between all platforms, but now Rocket League has also been enabled with the much-requested feature.

Rocket League players on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam are all now able to play together regardless of their platform. Players will want to make sure that they have cross-platform play enabled by checking the "Cross-Platform Play" box in the "Gameplay" section of the menu if they do wish to partake in a few friendly matches with players on other platforms. However, Psyonix hasn't enabled cross-platform parties just yet, though the studio has confirmed that the feature will be coming in the first update of 2019 and gamers can still play with their friends on other platforms through private matches.

Psyonix has been working on adding full cross-platform play for quite some time, at one point even claiming the studio just had to check a web page box to enable the feature. The major roadblock has been Sony, which has regularly proven to be an issue for developers hoping to enable cross-platform play in their games. Luckily, Sony has finally become more relaxed with its previously ham-fisted approach to the feature, and cross-platform play is now in beta on the platform, with Fortnite and Rocket League being the first two major games to support the feature.

Of course, Rocket League has supported cross-play for quite some time, just never with the PlayStation 4. The change is certainly a welcome one, both for Rocket League players and gamers hoping some of their other favorite games may get the feature in the near future.

It'll be interesting to see what game will be enabled with cross-play next. A strong contender would be Bungie's scii shooter Destiny 2, as the studio has already confirmed its looking into the feature. While it may not make it into the current entry, it would certainly be a great feature for the next entry into the franchise.

Rocket League is available now on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
