It appears that Rocket League is getting a new twist! Inspired by March Madness, Rocket League may soon switch up its gameplay with a basketball mode.

Rocket League, the insanely popular "car soccer" game may have to shed that moniker, as it appears the title is getting a new basketball game mode. Rocket League's developer Psyonix Studios tweeted out a picture of a new basketball court in place of its usual "soccer field" alongside the hashtag #RocketLeagueHoops.

But before fans get too excited that the mode will be availablenext week, Psyonix may be using March Madness just to tease the upcoming mode. There's no evidence that the new "Hoops" game type is coming out before the NCAA basketball tournament, which kicks off Sunday March 13.

It appears from the single screenshot released that the normal soccer field inspired map has been swapped for one that is Rocket League's version of a basketball court. Besides the visual change from soccer ball to basketball and grass to hardwood, the normal Rocket League goals are now basketball hoops. That should add a new interesting dynamic wherein players are trying to score in a smaller target that is off the ground, and conversely trying to defend that goal.

Psyonix has shown its willingness to switch up the formula with Rocket League, like they did with the hockey-inspired mode Snow Day. Moreover, the developer has continued to flesh out the experience with free content updates as well as paid cosmetic additions, like the Back to the Future Delorean, Portal themed DLC, and the Batmobile, which was just added this week.

Rocket League became a smash success after is was released on PS4 last year and was featured as a free PlayStation Plus game for the month. That resulted in tons of PS4 owners downloading and playing the game. Since then, the game has come to Xbox One (with its own set of Xbox-themed vehicles from Halo and Gears of War).

Rocket League's DLC has been a mixed bag of free and priced releases, but safe money is on "Rocket League Hoops" launching for free. Psyonix is sure to be talking more about the new game mode soon, and fans will want to keep their ears open. Those who aren't fans of the game yet might also want to give the game a try with this new content, as we at GameRant highly recommend the game.
