RoboCop has a surprisingly long list of licensed video games attached to the franchise. Between the run-and-gun RoboCop from developer Data East in 1988 and 2014's free-to-play RoboCop shooter, there's a legacy -- albeit one of dubious quality. RoboCop: Rogue City, announced in mid-2021, not only has to live up to that legacy but also solve how to connect a new generation to a 1987 action movie. The latest trailer for RoboCop: Rogue City shows how developer Teyon is doing just that.

The gameplay reveal trailer for RoboCop: Rogue City unveils the game's unique first-person shooter action. Players take on the role of RoboCop himself as he takes on crime in a crime-ridden version of Detroit's future. RoboCop will dive into industrial buildings, backroom drug dens, dark alleys, and also a fair share of sterile corporate office rooms. Players will also have RoboCop's toolkit available, with his strength and precision aim on display.

While the clear influence of the original RoboCop film and its sequel RoboCop 2 can be seen in the trailer, there's a more pointed announcement that shows the reverence RoboCop: Rogue City will have for the 80s films. Actor Peter Weller will be reprising his role as RoboCop in the new game. Weller was the actor with the robot for both RoboCop and RoboCop 2. He's also dabbled in video game voice work for RoboCop, like with Mortal Kombat 11's Aftermath DLC. But Weller's role in RoboCop: Rogue City may be the closest he's gotten to the original films yet.

The last confirmation made in the gameplay trailer for RoboCop: Rogue City is that the game is intended for a curious mix of platforms. Not only will it be released on next-gen platforms, including PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, but it will also be launching on Nintendo Switch. RoboCop: Rogue City's official release window is tentatively June 2023.

Expectations are up in the air for RoboCop: Rogue City. There's clearly a passion for the original work on display, but developer Teyon has left some would-be fans questioning the new game. Teyon's most recent project was Terminator: Resistance, which was reviewed quite poorly. Given another beloved 80s action film franchise to play with, Teyon has a lot to prove.

Overall, the new gameplay trailer for RoboCop: Rogue City is just a glimpse at what Teyon will eventually offer. There's very little protracted action, which could mean the gameplay shown is pre-alpha, in-game cinematic, or even a demo. Those interested in the new RoboCop game will just have to be patient to see what the full experience will deliver.
