A new horror docuseries titled Blumhouse's Compendium of Horror! will be hosted by horror legend Robert Englund and is set to debut this fall on EPIX courtesy of Blumhouse Television.
Englund, most known for his legendary role as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street and many of its sequels, is a horror icon, known for his knifed glove, humorous quips, and ample bloodshed. Englund himself has appeared in other lesser-known horror roles (Maniac, Eaten Alive) throughout the past several decades, in addition to his recent appearance as Victor Creel in Stranger Things season 4.
According to Fangoria, the docuseries will air in 5 parts, featuring interviews with some of the most influential horror filmmakers, producers, and actors alongside historians, scholars, and critics. The series is planned as “a definitive retrospective on the horror genre, revisiting the shocks and scares from iconic cinematic horror moments from the 1930s through today." Englund serves as narrator of the journey, exploring nearly a century of horror masterpieces and the reasons they have captured the public imagination, from simple entertainment to cultural catharsis.
Blumhouse's Compendium of Horror! joins a number of recent horror documentaries and series, including Eli Roth's History of Horror, Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and In Search of Darkness. These documentaries explore the impact of the genre on audiences, as well as the rich history of filmmaking, special effects, makeup, and the history of individual franchises. Englund's narration is sure to add great texture and dimension to the new series, following on the heels of his successful first season hosting the Travel Channels True Terror with Robert Englund, a show devoted to local hauntings and oddities.
While EPIX is usually seen as one of the more minor streaming networks when compared with giants like Netflix and Amazon, quality original programming will no doubt only expand their reach to audiences. The docuseries will appeal to young audiences looking to flesh out their horror knowledge and older audiences looking for that 1980s nostalgia factor brought by Englund himself. The series will debut prior to Halloween at the beginning of October and will also be a huge draw as audiences settle in for the spooky season, looking for great horror and related content.
Blumhouse's Compendium of Horror debuts on EPIX on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at 10 p.m. EDT/PDT.
