River City Girls 2 is the upcoming sequel to the beat 'em up RPG from Wayforward that is being published by Arc System Works. This game is slated as a direct sequel to the first River City Girls game that was released in 2019. This new entry in the Kunio-kun franchise follows the adventures of previous playable characters, Misako, Kyoko, Kunio, and Riki, along with two new playable characters, Marian and Provie. After the events of the first River City Girls, these six are thrown into a new adventure, where they must face an old foe that has resurfaced.

River City Girls 2 is looking to improve on the first game in quite a few ways, such as a bunch of new moves and weapons, along with being able to recruit enemies to help and fight. There's even a day-night cycle, new terrain and hazards, along with a bunch of new story interactions depending on the playable character that has been selected. While this game was first slated for this summer, the game's release date has been hit with a delay.

This update was posted on WayForward's official Twitter page, giving fans a heads-up on the delay. While it was originally scheduled to release in late summer 2022, the new release window is announced to ensure a quality experience for fans. The release window hasn't been specified in this tweet, but it's likely to see a release in 2023 instead. Not to leave fans high and dry, the game's official cover art was revealed as well.

The cover art shows all six playable characters of River City Girls 2 getting ready to battle, with Misako wielding a pink brass knuckle, while Kyoko uses a baseball bat. Both of their boyfriends, Kunio and Riki, are on the bottom, with the newcomers Marian and Provie on the left and right. Provie is a character from an older entry in the franchise, River City Ransom: Underground, while Marian is the main heroine of the Double Dragon series, which itself was derived from the Kunio-kun series.

As for the game's physical release, it is being provided by Limited Run Games. According to WayForward, these physical versions are on the way, but the supplier hasn't announced the preorder window yet. As for other games from WayForward that are being released this summer, Spidersaurs was recently released for all major platforms. It is a 2D run-'n'-gun action game, where players are fighting through swarms of dinosaur-spider hybrids, being another local co-op action game from the indie developer.

River City Girls 2 is currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
