One of the best first-person shooters of the 90s is coming back in 2021. Rise of the Triad Remastered was announced on Sunday during 3D Realms' digital Realms Deep 2020 event. No gameplay footage or screenshots were shared of the updated 1995 game, but it was confirmed for a 2021 release on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. This is the first time Rise of the Triad's been rereleased since its iOS launch in 2010, though a new game also named Rise of the Triad was released in 2013.

Rise of the Triad stood in the shadow of other FPS titles like Doom and Castle Wolfenstein, but was a bonafide hit on its own, too. The game features a similar gameplay structure to those other FPS. Players hunt down keys to unlock doors, pick up health, ammo, and weapons, and take advantage of power-ups. It also adds some interesting things, like 5 playable characters and enemies that dodge or beg for their lives.

The remastered version of Rise of the Triad is confirmed to be modernizing the title with basic expected features for an FPS in 2020. Things like widescreen support for modern monitors and mouse-look will be added, as will online functionality for Rise of the Triad's very aged multiplayer mode. For the most part, though, it'll be the classic Rise of the Triad experience — just on modern platforms.

3D Realms, Destructive Creations, and Apogee Software are said to be collaborating together on the project. It's just one of several different games and updates that the trio of studios has announced during the Realms Deep event. This more than others will definitely be triggering some nostalgia in all of the 90s FPS fans out there excited for the genre's modern resurgence.

Rise of the Triad Remastered launches in 2021 on PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox.
