Rimworld, a sci-fi colony sim drawing inspiration from sources like Dwarf Fortress and Firefly, is a game full of ever-changing challenges and randomly generated worlds, factions, and backstories that make playthroughs unique to each person. Since every tile within a world will have its own unique generation as well, many players spend a lot of time looking for the perfect map to settle their colony in where they’ll be both defended and have enough resources to be sustainable.

Since the perfect colony tile can make or break a colony’s survival, not everyone wants to take their chances with randomization or spend time looking for the perfect tile within a specific seed. Thankfully, the community is full of strategic and aesthetic seeds alike, which players can input into their own games when generating a world with ease.

Note: RimWorld seeds are case-sensitive, so players will need to enter them exactly as they’re written for the desired result.

While mountain bases can be hit or miss among players due to the risk of infestations, the amount of coverage good mountain ranges can provide from outdoor threats like raids and maddened animals makes sure players have a fair trade-off if they choose to set up their colony there.

One tile found by players in the 100ManTest seed took this to another level, with a mountain range along the coast leaving only two openings to the outside world, along with plenty of sheltered space to build a base in.

9 agony

Advanced Settings: Move overall temperature one click to the left

Another great example of a map that’s perfect for colonies prioritizing defense is a boreal mountain tile on the agony seed, provided the player generates the world without any DLC or mods enabled.

While boreal tiles are certainly a much harder place for colonies to survive, especially early on, the shortened growing period can be handled with a few sun lamps, heaters, and skilled hunters. To make up for this, the tile offers a large but secure alcove players can build a sizable base in while still holding a defensible position from the one natural exit provided.

Advanced Settings: Move population once to the right, medium tile size (275x275)

For players looking for a defensible mountain base in more temperate locations, a temperate mountain tile with impassable terrain on one side is an excellent choice.

With a long open space surrounded by rock on three sides with fertile soil and a creek running through it, the map within is the perfect place to set up a colony where they’ll have reliable sources of power, food, and cover from raids. Since several parts of the mountain are relatively thin, colonists can dig passages to maximize maneuverability without sacrificing the security as well.

For players looking for an extra challenge, a good desert tile is the perfect place to test out new play styles as they adapt to the challenges of one of Rimworld’s harsher biomes.

In addition to a gorgeous coastal layout, colonies can enjoy the protection of an ocean on one side, mountainous rock formations that provide plenty of choke points to protect from raids, and even a few cave systems players can explore, loot, or seal off if they’re not willing to take their chances.

6 seed parka

Coverage: 100%

Tile Coordinates: 22.09N, 27.70E

No matter how much careful planning a player puts into their game, a colony is only ever as strong as its supply of food and electricity, which will only grow more demanding as the colony grows. Because of this, fertile soil and power sources can often be just as important as chokepoints and ore deposits.

Fortunately, colonies on this tile can enjoy the benefits of fertile soil patches and not one but three geysers, all within an easily defensible clearing surrounded by mountains with only one natural exit.

5 shiv

Coverage: 30%

Tile Coordinates: 27.20N, 25.88W

In terms of map tiles with natural choke points that protect colonies without closing them off from the valuable resources they need to sustain themselves, this map tile is one of the better options.

In addition to having a single exit to the outside world and an incredibly narrow chokepoint raiders would have to cross to reach any colony that’s built, two geysers within the protected area offer a reliable source of energy for anyone who pursues the geothermal power research project. Additionally, players won’t have to be permanently limited to such a small space either, as colonies who are ready to expand can mine south to unlock a much larger area.

Tile Coordinates: 2.93N, 5.72E

Advanced Settings: Sparse population, move rainfall twice to the right

Anyone looking for a tropical rainforest to settle in won’t be disappointed here. Not only will players have plenty of space to build and fertile soil they can farm on, but a river running through the map that can provide a consistent source of energy year-round.

The mountains around the area provide perfect shelter from hostile animals and factions, and the natural choke point takes security a step further, as the only way in and out of the sheltered area is by wading through the river.

3 hill to die on

Coverage: 50%

Tile Coordinates: 16.27N, 5.77W

Another good choice for players looking for a secluded rainforest tile can be found on this seed. While considerably more open than most mountain maps once the whole area is revealed, colonists still start out with a small and contained alcove in one corner of the map. With one entrance from the north edge of the screen, colonies can get a secure foothold before dealing with the threats of the larger area, which can be unlocked by mining just a few tiles south once players feel ready to face it.

2 donatello

Coverage: 50%

Tile Coordinates: 44.20N, 5.81W

When establishing a colony in a boreal tile, heat and food will be essential, as well as strong reinforcements to avoid injuries as much as possible. Since healroot and other crops will only grow for twenty days of the year, a lot of power early on will go into heaters and setting up a steady source of food for the winter.

Luckily, this tile provides both safety and power with geysers and a river surrounded by mountains that provide decent choke points. With caves and mountains rich in ore, players have a perfect alcove to start in, so long as they seal off the more hazardous caves early on.

1 konstantin

Tile Coordinates: 35.11N, 56.15W

Having a large, flexible area with a single point of entry is a great draw for settling a colony on that map tile, whether those barriers are made of oceans, lakes, or mountains. For anyone who wants a bit more flexibility without sacrificing that sense of security, players have two alcoves in one map they can choose from: one to the north, surrounded by mountains, and the other against the ocean to the west. Whether someone wants the freedom and adaptability that comes from multiple options or prefers to spread their bases out, both are equally viable locations to build in and defend.
