As one of the most famous examples of a modern long-running animated series, Rick and Morty sure made its fans wait in between previous seasons. However, that will no longer be the case from now on as the show enters a new phase.

In a recent interview with Inverse, showrunner Scott Marder and producer James Siciliano confirmed what most Rick and Morty fans suspected and were ultimately hoping for, that being the series' intention to move forwards with a new season each year from 2021. Season 5 finally saw Rick and Morty recognize a more canonical and progressive storytelling style that puts the show on a different path than Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon's confessed usage of the multiverse “cheat code." Nevertheless, Marder claimed the end of that era will also mean the showrunners will "have a season of the show every year from this point forward."

The pair admitted that Rick and Morty season 5 finale was huge for the show, yet that it also sets up perfectly new dangers and plot points that will “begin the second half of a larger story” for Rick Sanchez. Marder and Siciliano also spoke of their role in working with the show’s creators to keep things moving, noting how the former just came in for season 5 when work for the fourth one wasn’t yet completed. Regardless of that, the team put together “The Vat of Acid” chapter, which is seen as one of the best Rick and Morty episodes the show has to offer.

Marder also jokingly referred to the latest Rick and Morty season 6 trailer, which sees Summer completely baffled by the notion of doing a "Die Hard," a cultural reference clearly not meant for the 17-year-old but for an older audience instead, very much like Harmon, Roiland, and Marder, who consider themselves fans of the '80s and '90s action. Still, he claims the team doesn’t necessarily set out to tackle specific genres, movies or shows. Instead, that mostly happens by chance, with the script coming to fruition first and then the writers merely seize the opportunity to “take on Ex Machina that can do X” or maybe go full-on Blade Runner.

Given that the series is already booked a 70-episode deal back in 2018, at a 10 episodes per season rate, Rick and Morty's new yearly output would mean the story is guaranteed to continue all the way up to season 10 in 2026. Despite all the meaningful changes, Rick and Morty season 5 was not a hit for many fans, especially given considering some of its earlier episodes failed to land the show’s signature humor as smoothly as it did in the past.

The Rick and Morty season 6 premiere is due this Sunday, with the show already receiving rave reviews. On the other hand, the complete duo is also dropping on MultiVersus soon, once Rick joins the already playable Morty in the game.

Rick and Morty season 6 premieres on Adult Swim on September 4, 2022.
