Though Re:Zero borrows quite a lot from some of its peers, it still features plenty of its own unique ideas. Combine these with its cast of likable characters, and it's easy to see how it has become such a huge hit with anime fans despite its second season having only just finished airing. While the anime is still fairly fresh though, the series itself has been around for almost a decade now.

Since serialization began back in 2012, series creator Tappei Nagatsuki has done an excellent job of fleshing out the series' world; particularly when it comes to its colorful cast of characters. Through the manga, anime, light novels, short story collections and video games, there really is a real wealth of information available for those looking to delve a little deeper into the world of Re:Zero.

10 Natsuki Subaru

Natsuki Subaru from Re:Zero

Age: 17 (Arc 1-4) / 18 (Arc 5+)

Height: 5'8"

Birthday: April 1

Subaru lacks a lot of the qualities that one might expect to find in a typical anime protagonist. He's not particularly strong, either physically or emotionally, but what he lacks in strength, he more than makes up for in determination. His behavior can be a little rash at times though, hence why the author chose April Fool's Day for his Birthday.

Many find his large brown eyes to be incredibly intimidating, although they are one of the things that Emilia likes best about him. His Return by Death ability effectively makes him immortal and also allows him to see into alternate futures or loops in which he died.

9 Emilia

Emilia from Re:Zero

Age: Unknown

Height: 5'4½"

Birthday: September 23

Although Emilia's true age is unknown, both her physical and emotional age place her somewhere in her teens. Her long silver hair and purple and blue eyes make her one of the series' most recognizable characters, although she is often overshadowed by others despite her importance to the main narrative.

As well as being the main female character, the Half Elf is one of the candidates to become the 42nd King of Lugnica and is also contracted with several spirits. This, together with her proficiency as a mage, makes her incredibly powerful and often leads to her saving both herself and Subaru from danger.

8 Puck

Puck from Re:Zero

Age: 420 (Arc 1-4) / 421 (Arc 5+)

Height: 0'3½"

Birthday: Unknown

Puck is an incredibly strong user of magic and was contracted with Emilia for most of the first four arcs. Such is the strength of their bond that he is willing to destroy the entire world on her behalf, although he is ultimately forced to sever their contract to remove a seal that is placed on her memories.

Puck was once a human, but was transformed into an artificial spirit by Echidna around 400 years ago. Now, his primary form is that of a common house cat, but with enough mana, he is able to transform into a 65 foot monster known as the Beast of the End. Sustaining this form requires huge amounts of power though, so he rarely uses it for long.

7 Ram

Ram from Re:Zero

Age: 17 (Arc 2) / 18 (Arc 3-4) / 19 (Arc 5+)

Height: 5'1"

Birthday: February 2

Ram is the twin sister of Rem and makes her first appearance in the Re:Zero's second arc. To begin with, she's presented as a neutral character, but, over time, she begins to align herself with Subaru more and more frequently. She has pink hair and red eyes, although her left eye is often covered up by her bangs.

She used to have a horn when she was younger, although this was sliced off by members of the Witch Cult during the massacre of her village. She and her sister were saved by Roswaal, however, and Ram has since gone on to develop strong feelings for the mage despite him being the one who ordered the attack on the Oni clan in the first place.

6 Rem

Rem from Re:Zero

Age: 17 (Arc 2) / 18 (Arc 3-4) / 19 (Arc 5+)

Height: 5' ½"

Birthday: February 2

Unlike her twin sister, Rem has blue hair and eyes and is incredibly impulsive. Her bangs cover her right eye rather than her left, so it's pretty easy to tell them apart. She is a strong magic user, although is nowhere near as capable as Ram and specializes in water magic as opposed to wind.

Her Synestheia ability also comes in useful, as not only does it allow the two sisters to communicate through telepathy, but it also allows Rem to transmit mana to her sister, greatly increasing the strength of her magic. Upon first meeting Subaru, she doesn't really trust him, but eventually opens up and becomes a secondary love interest for the protagonist.

5 Felt

Felt from Re:Zero

Age: Unknown

Height: 5'0"

Birthday: August 8

Felt's exact age is never actually stated, but it's thought that she is around 15 years old at the beginning of the first arc. Like Emilia, she's a candidate to become the 42nd King of Lugnica, although it's heavily implied that she's actually the King's missing niece who was kidnapped around 14 years ago.

Several characters have suggested as much over the years and she definitely matches the description, but as of the moment, it is yet to be fully confirmed. When first introduced, she had been hired to steal Emilia's insignia, although ultimately goes on to fight alongside the heroes in the battle against the first arc's main antagonist, Elsa.

4 Garfiel Tinsel

Garfiel from Re:Zero

Age: 14 (Arc 4) / 15 (Arc 5+)

Height: Unknown

Birthday: October 12

Garfiel is one of the more complex characters in Re:Zero and serves as both an antagonist and protagonist at various points during the story. As his appearance suggests, his father was a demi human and this also explains his immense physical strength. That said, he's still pretty short for his age, although an official height has never been given.

Having spent almost all of his life in Sanctuary, he harbors a debilitating fear of the outside world, but this has improved somewhat as time has gone by. The distinctive white scar on his face was self inflicted, with Garfiel having repeatedly smashed his head against a wall after being shown a vision of his mother's death while participating in the Trials of the Sanctuary.

3 Roswaal L Mathers

Roswaal from Re:Zero

Age: 29 (Arc 4) / 30 (Arc 5+)

Height: 6'1"

Birthday: September 16

Roswaal is the Margrave of the Mathers territory and Lugnica's official Court Mage, but there's a lot more to the character than first meets the eye. Though his body is that of a 29 year old when he's first introduced, the soul that's inside it is actually over 400 years old and has been there ever since Roswaal was 14.

Being possessed by a powerful wizard unsurprisingly makes him one of the most proficient mages in the kingdom and also allows him to utilize all six elements. Though he is typically quite selfish by nature, he does care deeply about Ram and Rem and has been caring for the pair since their village was destroyed six years before the start of the first arc.

2 Beatrice

Beatrice from Re:Zero

Age: 400+

Height: 4'7"

Birthday: Unknown

Despite taking the form of an 11-year-old girl, Beatrice is actually an artificial spirit that was created by the Witch of Greed more than 400 years ago. For centuries, she served as the caretaker of the Forbidden Library at Roswaal's Mansion, but left at the end of the fourth arc after agreeing a contract with Subaru.

Though Beatrice does have an official date of birth, her birthday remains a mystery to series fans. According to series creator Tappei Nagatsuki, revealing it would be a massive spoiler. There's been some speculation among the fandom as to what Nagatsuki means by this, although no viable suggestions have been offered up so far.

1 Otto Suwen

Otto Suwen from Re:Zero

Age: 20 (Arc 3-4) / 21 (Arc 5+)

Height: 5'10"

Birthday: March 24

Otto made his debut in the third arc, although started life as little more than Subaru's personal chauffeur. He eventually becomes one of Subaru's biggest supporters though and even risks his own life to save the protagonist from the White Whale. Though he ultimately fails, the intent still says a lot about the type of person that he is.

Otto's importance as a character increases as the story progresses and he has a few big moments in some of the later arcs. That said, he still only shows up periodically and is very much a bit-part character when compared to the likes of Subaru and Emilia.
