Housemarque's Returnal just launched as one of the first AAA exclusives for the PlayStation 5. Today, Returnal is receiving its first post-launch patch that addresses some of the bugs that players have been experiencing.

Returnal is a sci-fi roguelike that sees players caught in a time loop after crash landing on a strange alien planet. The game tasks players with defeating a variety of aliens in hectic shootouts, facing bosses, and upgrading Returnal's arsenal of weapons to increase their chance at survival. While the game has received a warm welcome from critics, players have reported some bugs that the new patch looks to address.

The biggest fix coming with the patch fixes an issue that sees some trophies not unlocking correctly. The patch notes, however, do say that while this issue has been corrected with the patch, players will have to re-earn any trophies that they did not unlock due to the bug. The patch also addresses an issue that saw some pre-order suits blocking Returnal players from being able to open certain doors or collection items when they were equipped. Fixing the bug is definitely a big help as it was causing some players to be unable to progress through their runs as they couldn't open a required door.

Other fixes are smaller, but still very welcome. They include some stability fixes to address the crashes that some players were experiencing as well as a fix for incorrect healing behavior when players were resting in Helios. The patch also increases the number of scout corpses that will be available in all biomes as well as fixing issues some players were running into while using certain custom controller mappings. The patch does not, however, address the complaint that some players have had regarding Returnal's difficult save system. The full patch notes are also listed below.

Patch Notes:

  • Fixed an issue where certain Trophies might not unlock under specific gameplay conditions. Note: missing Trophies will need to be replayed to unlock.
  • Multiple stability fixes addressing rare crashes/hangs.
  • Fixed issue with pre-order suits occasionally blocking item collection and door opening.
  • Fixed incorrect healing behaviour when resting in Helios.
  • Configuration changes to increase the number of scout corpses available in all biomes.
  • Fixed issues with certain custom controller mappings.
  • Numerous minor fixes and improvements

While the patch does not bring any large changes with it, the bug fixes are definitely nice and should fix some of the more important and common issues that players have been encountering while playing Returnal. Hopefully, with the patch players will be better able to keep completing runs in search of the truth hidden in the narrative. Returnal is a game shrouded in mystery, however, so it will be interesting what else comes out about the game as players get to spend more time exploring its strange planet and the lore surrounding it. It will also be great to see just what is in the future for Returnal, as its launch already makes for a great next-generation console experience.

Returnal is available now for PlayStation 5.
