Returnal is a tough game that is full of mystery and intrigue, but after players manage to beat it, they may be surprised to find out that there's still more to the game. The ending of Act 2 tends to leave players with more questions than it answers, and those wanting to get to the bottom of Selene's mysterious past will definitely want to access the secret ending. Just like everything else in the game, though, this is no easy task. Players will first need to collect six Sunface Fragments, one from each biome, and then revisit Selene's house one last time before defeating the final boss once again to see the secret ending.

Before Returnal players start searching for these elusive Sunface Fragments, it's important to understand the requirements to make them spawn. The most important thing is that players need to have already beaten Act 2 once, but they also need to have seen all five house sequences as well. This is a minor spoiler, but players will know they've completed the last house sequence when they learn the truth about what caused Helios to crash.

The Sunface Fragment in the Crimson Wastes is actually very easy to get. It is found early on in the level and doesn't require players to fight any major mini bosses or enemies. That said, it's unique in that it requires the player to have the only missable permanent Xenotech Device, the Promethean Insulators. For those players that missed these, they'll need to make their way back to Biome 5 (Fractured Wastes) and use a key to unlock the side path door in the main hub area.

Returnal how to get secret ending part 2

Assuming players have the Promethean Insulators already, the next step is to make it to the Crimson Wastes. Continue on through the first area or two until a side path leads off to a long structure. Use a key to open this door if necessary and players will find hazardous floors and a whole lot of lasers. Navigate through these obstacles in order to reach the other side and find the second Sunface Fragment lying next to one of Selene's many corpses.

For those that haven't, it may be worth backtracking to get the Overgrown Ruins Sunface Fragment from the first biome, but it's also an option to forge onward and head to the next biome, the Derelict Citadel. Keep in mind that players don't have to face Ixion again before moving onward, and there should even be a portal that warps players to the top of the mountain allowing them to bypass the temple portion of this level.

Returnal is available now on PS5.
