Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime officially retired from the company on April 15. And while many fans are sad to see him go, Reggie has joined Twitter since his retirement, treating fans to images of his office, some retirement gifts, his custom Satoru Iwata amiibo, and more. However, one of the retirement gifts Reggie tweeted a picture of has generated a bit more buzz than the others, as it may potentially be a hint at the next game from Retro Studios.

Retro Studios is the award-winning studio behind Nintendo exclusives like the Metroid Prime series and the most recent Donkey Kong Country games. Retro sent a portrait of Reggie featuring him posing with various characters that the studio has worked with over the years, including what appears to be a brand new, never-before-seen character. The character is located in the bottom left-hand corner of the portrait, but is strategically blocked from view by a Mario amiibo.

While the character is mostly blocked from view, it's still possible to see some sort of robot-like hand waving from just behind the Mario amiibo. This has been taken as a tease for Retro's next game, which has likely been in development since production wrapped on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze all the way back in 2014.

It's possible that this robot character is the protagonist of Retro's next title, which has presumably been in the works for at least five years and could very well be in the final stages of development. Of course, this is assuming Retro's project wasn't canned when the studio was asked to reboot development on Metroid Prime 4 after the original iteration of the game didn't meet Nintendo's standards.

It wouldn't make much sense for Nintendo to cancel Retro's in-development project for Metroid Prime 4. After all, Retro was likely deep into the development process when it was given the reins to Metroid Prime 4, and throwing all that work away would potentially be a big financial hit for Nintendo. Assuming development on that project, whatever it is, has been going well, it would make more sense for Nintendo to release it and then shift the studio's full focus to Metroid Prime 4 after it ships.

If this is a tease for Retro's next game, then it may make fans question the purpose of Reggie's Twitter account. Perhaps Reggie will continue to promote Nintendo in retirement by teasing new games, or maybe this is just a one-off occasion that he's doing as a goodbye to fans. One thing's for certain, and that's Nintendo fans will want to watch Reggie's Twitter activity closely in the coming months.
