Retro gaming seems to become more popular as each year passes. With renewed interest in remakes and remasters granting even lesser-known games some time in the spotlight, newer Xbox consoles accounting for compatibility with older legacy titles, and Sony forming its own preservation team, old-school gaming is nowhere as niche as it was a decade ago. That said, even with the extra focus, great deals on retro gear and games can still be had, as evidenced by one Reddit user who managed to make a massive fifth and sixth-gen purchase for just thirty dollars.

In a post submitted to r/psx, a subreddit dedicated to Sony’s original PlayStation console, Reddit user LOLY_SK showcased a huge haul they managed to secure consisting of multiple PS1 and PS2 consoles along with accompanying controllers and an original Xbox system for good measure. The original PlayStation has received quite a bit of added attention recently thanks to Sony’s PS Plus Premium service, though some would argue that there’s no replacing the actual systems.

Along with the consoles and controllers came a set of semi-obscure game discs, the most notable of which was the wonderfully weird Counter-Strike port for the Xbox. Additionally, LOLY_SK secured three separate memory cards, likely one for each console. While old PlayStation memory cards are nowhere near as rare or expensive as those used on the PS Vita, some retro collectors completely forget to grab them, misremembering when onboard storage became commonplace in consoles.

The r/psx post seems to have been received with a healthy amount of skepticism from other users. While some respondents congratulated the original poster on their terrific find, others questioned how thirty dollars could be stretched so far when it typically only affords collectors a single memory card and one or two games. Yet, as unbelievable as it seems, garage sale finds such as these aren’t altogether unheard of in the new era of retro relevancy. In 2021, TikTok user east.bay.picker found a collection of must-have GameCube titles going for substantially less than they were worth.

On the other hand, single parts of this haul might sell for well over thirty dollars alone. The original Xbox Duke controller, for instance, is surprisingly in demand right now, with certain Xbox One and Xbox Series X-compatible versions going for ninety dollars. Given the tremendous retro windfall LOLY_SK seems to have come upon, they must have managed to somehow max out their real-life luck stat.
