Retro City Rampage Gameplay Trailer

Retro City Rampage Trailer

Retro City Rampage is an upcoming open world action, 8-bit, pop culture parody game that takes what we expect from games such as Grand Theft Auto and brings those mechanics back into the 8-bit world. In this world VBlank Entertainment has created, pop culture references from the 8-bit era are abundant.

The gameplay trailer is a fast-paced adrenaline ride through this 8-bit world. I love the look of this game. It takes me back to a simpler time of gaming but features modern day game elements.

The references in this game range from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Legend of Zelda, Back To The Future, Double Dragon, Bionic Commando, Contra, Metal Gear, Sonic The Hedgehog, and many more. Hilarious parodies of popular movies and shows can be seen all over the world. For example, the player is seen passing by such establishments and shops as "Pie Hard" (the full sign reads "Yippee Kiyay Pie Hard Mother Baker"), "Gin & Produce" (a reference to Snoop Dogg's song Gin & Juice), "Baja Gaiden", "Vanilla Ice Cream", and "Lunch-Out".

The music is positively magnificent. It perfectly compliments the world and the gameplay, ramping up the nostalgic feel of the entire experience to an astronomical level. Watching the trailer with your eyes closed, you would think someone near you was deep into an original Nintendo Entertainment System game. In the game, you will able to listen to change and listen to different radio stations a la GTA.

Set in Theftropolis in 1980, players will have many different weapons at their disposal as they steal cars, rob banks, and run from the police. Some of the 20 different weapons include a baseball bat, nightstick, pistol, flamethrower, boomerang, and a sword. There will be over 40 missions in the game as well as combat challenges.

I really hope this game comes to the Xbox Live Arcade. I haven't experienced such pure enjoyment from a mere trailer since viewing the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World trailer (hurry up August 25th!).

However, as of right now, Retro City Rampage has only be confirmed for WiiWare and is set for release by the end of the year.
