'Resistance: Burning Skies' Story Trailer Reveals 'The Executioner' Chimera

The Resistance franchise has always been one filled with interesting lore, and Resistance 3 added on to that by giving (arguably) the strongest story of all four titles. If the newly released story trailer is any indication, Resistance: Burning Skies looks to continue the trend.

In the series' first Vita outing, Resistance: Burning Skies takes place roughly around the start of Resistance 2, though through the eyes of New York firefighter Tom Riley. Players will fight the Chimeran invaders who have begun their attack on the East Coast.

It's not all about alien killing though, Resistance: Retribution and Resistance 3 gave our protagonists more reasons for fighting. In Retribution Grayson wanted to avenge his brother, and in Resistance 3 Capelli wanted to keep his family alive. Riley has his own motives, which you can see in the trailer below.

Resistance fans probably noticed a few things in this trailer - the introduction of a new Chimeran enemy type, and a new weapon. The new Chimera is called the Executioner. He seems to resemble the Titan from Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, except with a giant cannon for an arm. The weapon is called the Hunter, and it's a burst fire rifle, but also a variant of the Marskman rifle from previous titles. Much like the Marksman, the Hunter fires a mini drone as its secondary fire, and it can be guided using the Vita's touch screen.

The game is looking pretty solid right now, but that being said, last time we played Burning Skies it still needed a fair bit of polish. Animations were stiff and robotic while the gunplay could have used a bit of tweaking. But with over a month left to add the finishing touches, we hope those issues will be sorted out before launch.

And who knows, maybe if Burning Skies is a success Nihilistic will take over series now that Insomniac is done with the Resistance franchise.

Resistance: Burning Skies is available May 29th, 2012 for the PlayStation Vita
