'Resistance: Burning Skies' Release Date and Box Art Revealed

Resistance Burning Skies Box Release Date

The PlayStation Vita lands on store shelves February 22nd, alongside some of Sony's most beloved franchises -- with one major exception: the Resistance series. Thankfully, today Sony has announced that Resistance: Burning Skies, the Vita spin-off title, will release May 29, 2012.

Resistance: Burning Skies is being developed by Nihilistic Software and takes place in New York City, between the events of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. Players will take control of Tom Riley, a New York fire fighter as he battles the Chimera during the first invasion of America.

The game will reportedly take full advantage of the Vita's hardware, including its touch screen controls. Players can tap the melee button on the screen to have Riley (no, not that Riley) swing his axe and chop up Hybrids into pieces.

In addition to the game's release date, Sony also released an image of Burning Skies' box art. Check it out:

Sony hopes that the box art will convey the same "eerie essence" as the box art from Resistance: Fall of Man. The box art here certainly has some very dark tones, such as the red-orange sky and the Chimeran ship dropping either spires or fighters in the distance. It doesn't have the same artistic appeal as Resistance 3's box art, but then again, Resistance 3 didn't exactly fly off shelves.

The box art also reveals that Resistance: Burning Skies will require one of the Vita's proprietary memory cards and offer online play. No information has been given on the latter, though hopefully it will be true online play and not ad-hoc only like Modnation Racers: Road Trip.

With Insomniac no longer developing Resistance titles, it sounds as if Nihilistic will be the one to continue the franchise, especially if Burning Skies sells well. The game looks very promising so far, and in the end, as long as we Resistance fans get to fight the stinks again, I'm sure we'll be happy.

Resistance: Burning Skies releases May 29, 2012, for the PlayStation Vita.
