Sony Pictures’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City arrives in theatres this week and the studio has upped the marketing game just before the premiere. In the latest featurette released by the studio, the film’s director and the producer at Capcom talk about working together and how the upcoming film is loaded with Easter eggs, a fact that is bound to draw in fans of the game franchise.

The Resident Evil game franchise is among Capcom’s best sellers and over 120 million units of the game have been sold cumulatively around the world since release. Several live-action Resident Evil films have been released in the past, but Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City takes fans back to the first two games in the series, bringing in some of the most-loved playable characters.

In the new featurette, director Johannes Roberts refers to the integral role that Capcom played in bringing Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City to life. Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who has previously worked on producing the Resident Evil games, worked alongside Roberts throughout the process. Roberts is a fan of the games himself, as Kobayashi reveals. As someone who appreciates the original content of the games, Roberts has included several Easter eggs into the film for fellow game fans.

It is already known that the film’s plot will be based on 1996’s Resident Evil and 1998’s Resident Evil 2. However, Kobayashi reveals that Roberts has even “snuck in one of his favorite elements from a later game.” He hopes that the fans of the games will be able to find it. He refers to the film as a “new Resident Evil world” created by Roberts, which combines elements from the game with fresh concepts created specifically for the film.

In past interviews, Roberts has revealed that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will not be an entire adaptation of the plot from the first two games. Kobayashi goes on to confirm this and hopes that true fans of the franchise will appreciate the differences that they have incorporated into the script. It is already known that the famous villain from Resident Evil 2, Mr. X, will not be a part of the upcoming film, which makes one wonder what other changes the film has made to the original plot.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City premieres in theatres on November 24, 2021.
