Resident Evil Village released a few days ago, but Capcom has officially confirmed some impressive sales numbers for the latest entry in the long-running survival horror franchise. Resident Evil has been going strong for 25 years and it looks like the series remains as popular as ever.

According to Capcom, cumulative shipments of Resident Evil games across the entirety of the series officially exceed 100 million units with the successful launch of Resident Evil Village. The first Resident Evil title debuted way back in 1996 and this latest title's success shows the lasting power of the RE franchise 25 years later.

Resident Evil Village is a continuation of the mainline RE series and it follows the story of RE7 Biohazard directly. Capcom has officially confirmed that Resident Evil Village has already sold 3 million units. Following the new hero of the Resident Evil series, Ethan Winters, players have been exploring this new action-packed survival horror set in a mysterious village. Players received a taste of this village with Resident Evil Village receiving multiple demos ahead of its release last week. One demo focused on the Castle of Resident Evil Village while the other demo focused on the village and it appears that the demos paid off with the successful early sales being reported by Capcom.

Resident Evil Village has a long way to go to catch up to sales of other titles in the RE franchise, with its prequel (Resident Evil 7 Biohazard) selling an impressive 8.5 million units as of December 31st, 2020. Resident Evil 2 ushered in a new wave of survival horror fans when it released in 2019, selling 7.2 million units as of June 30, 2020. Resident Evil 2 remains the top dog of the RE franchise, making 7.2 million units the sales milestone for future Resident Evil titles to surpass.

In celebration of Resident Evil's 25th anniversary, Capcom will be launching Resident Evil Re:Verse as a free add-on to Resident Evil Village. Re:Verse is an online multiplayer action experience where gamers will battle it out as popular characters from the series similar to Resident Evil Resistance's roster of heroes. The next project Resident Evil fans can look forward to is the upcoming Netflix animated series called Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness which releases worldwide in July.

Considering Resident Evil Village has already sold an impressive three million units worldwide in a week, it may eventually catch up to the sales of Resident Evil 7 or even the staggering sales of Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil Village's antagonist Lady Dimitrescu became a meme ahead of the game's release which may have also contributed to Capcom's successful launch last month.

Resident Evil Village is available right now for Google Stadia, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
