Resident Evil Village has largely been a critical success since it launched last month. A new report says Capcom's newest entry into the long-running series is a commercial success as well.

Resident Evil Village is the official eighth entry in the franchise and the second one to use the first-person POV for gameplay. While some fans of the series were originally against moving away from the third-person point of view, the gaming public has apparently embraced the new formula with their wallets.

Video game industry analyst Matt Piscatella took to Twitter on Monday morning to demonstrate just how successful Resident Evil Village has been since its launch. The analyst pointed to a US NPD report that was positive for the video game industry in general but especially for Capcom and Village.

While spending on video games was up by about three percent over the same period last year, Resident Evil Village enjoyed the best launch month of every title so far in 2021. It's also the second best-selling game on the market for the entire year. That's despite the game being on store shelves for less than a month. It doesn't appear there was a platform where Resident Evil Village didn't sell well. Piscatella said the game was the best selling game of May on the PlayStation Store as well as the Xbox and Steam when it came to tracked titles.

Resident Evil Village is a direct follow-up to Resident Evil 7 and the trials and tribulations of Ethan Winters. The latest entry in franchise starts off after Ethan and his girlfriend Mia seem to be trying to live happily ever after following the couple finding a cure to the disease she was infected with. The pair even managed to have a baby together, but the happy little tableau is broken early in Village's story as Ethan is pulled back into the action.

Resident Evil Village was the second of two new releases in May that managed to make the Top 20 in terms of sales, but it was easily the most successful of the two. Biomutant also launched in May and was able to crack the list - according to Piscatella - though just barely as it registered as the 15th best-selling game of the month. One other notable entry into the Top 20 was Days Gone, which jumped from 247th in sales the month before, to 20th thanks to the former PS4 exclusive launching on the PC.

Resident Evil Village is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
