Capcom has a long history of releasing demos for its games ahead of launch, and the upcoming Resident Evil Village is no exception. However, Capcom is taking a somewhat strange route when it comes to the Resident Evil Village demos, opting to release them one at a time, and with restrictions tied to each one. For instance, the first demo was exclusive to PlayStation 5, whereas the second and third demos are only available to play for a limited time, and within a very specific window.

Resident Evil fans will have another chance to try the Resident Evil Village Castle Demo - the third demo released for the game so far - but those on PlayStation were able to check it out late on April 24 and into the early morning hours of April 25. Like the Village DemoResident Evil Village players were given a 30 minute time limit to get through it, though those who played it should have been able to accomplish that feat without too much difficulty.

The Resident Evil Village Castle Demo was another impressive showcase for the survival-horror game, especially when playing it on PlayStation 5, and it's a promising sign that the final product will live up to the hype. For those who missed out, here's what the Resident Evil Village demo brought to the table.

Story So Far

The Village Demo for Resident Evil Village left things off with protagonist Ethan Winters leaving the titular village and making his way to the nearby castle. The Castle Demo itself skips ahead a bit, as it doesn't show how exactly Ethan wound up inside the castle walls. In any case, players start the Castle Demo in a small room, equipped with a pistol and a knife, but missing some of the other items they may have acquired in the previous demo.

Ethan's goal is to find is missing daughter Rose, who, based on the trailers released so far, was apparently kidnapped by Chris Redfield. There's clearly a lot more to the Resident Evil Village story that has yet to be revealed, and unsurprisingly, Capcom doesn't provide any concrete answers in the demo. Those wanting to know the fate or Ethan's daughter Rose will have to wait for the full game to launch in a couple of weeks to find out.

The Duke

Resident Evil Village players are able to explore a small section of the castle fairly thoroughly, and they will find all sorts of goodies for their troubles. This includes some of Resident Evil Village's in-game currency, Lei, as well as crafting items, ammunition, and more. Some of these items are squirreled away in vases and pots, which are ripe for smashing. A notable quality of life improvement fans may notice when smashing pots in Resident Evil Village is that it can be done without actually equipping the knife, which seems small but should be a significant improvement to the overall pacing.

After exploring the castle for a bit, players will undoubtedly find a room with The Duke. For the uninitiated, The Duke is Resident Evil Village's equivalent of the Merchant from Resident Evil 4. He essentially serves as a living shop for Ethan, with players able to purchase weapons, consumable items, and upgrades from The Duke in the demo. The Castle Demo lets Resident Evil Village players spend their money however they want with The Duke. They can choose to purchase a shotgun or they could dump all their money into pistol upgrades instead.

Those who take the time to thoroughly explore the castle will find more Lei lying around that they can then use to make more purchases from The Duke. Resident Evil Village also has Treasure that players can find and then sell to The Duke for a profit. It's yet another example of how Resident Evil Village is taking inspiration from RE4, and so those who liked the system in that game will feel right at home here.

Lady Dimitrescu's Daughter

It's a good thing that Resident Evil Village players have access to The Duke in the Castle Demo, too, because they are plenty of dangerous enemies that players encounter as well. This includes some armed enemies in the basement in addition to one of Lady Dimitrescu's daughters. Players can hear her walking around the castle thanks to the game's incredible sound design, and when she decides to confront Ethan head-on, it serves as some of the most intense moments in the demo.

Players can buy themselves some time by shooting Lady Dimitrescu's daughter, but it doesn't seem possible to put her down. After wasting all of our shotgun shells and pistol rounds into her, she still continued to pursue Ethan relentlessly. The only option is to flee, which leads Ethan deeper into the castle and sees him coming face to face with other monstrosities.

Gorgeous Next-Gen Horror

The Resident Evil Village Castle Demo ends with Ethan knocked to the ground and players don't get to see what happens next. The takeaway from the Castle Demo, though, is that Resident Evil Village is set to be a stunning next-gen horror game when it launches, and it should go a long way in pleasing both fans of Resident Evil 4 as well as Resident Evil 7. It remains to be seen how it all comes together, but it seems as though Resident Evil fans have a lot to look forward to.

Resident Evil Village launches May 7 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
