The hype around Resident Evil Village before launch seemingly translated to sales numbers as the 8th installment in the Resident Evil series shipped over 5 million copies. Monster Hunter Rise has also done very well for Capcom with the Monster Hunter title selling 5 million copies as of last April. With huge games such as these, it makes sense that Capcom will want to continue supporting them, potentially hoping to garner an even larger audience.

A few months ago, Capcom announced that it has started development on additional DLC for Resident Evil Village. And just last month, Capcom also announced that Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak will be additional content that will be released sometime in Summer 2022. While not much was known about the DLC for Resident Evil Village, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak was confirmed to be a paid expansion.

During an Integrated Report from Capcom, it revealed that it has free DLC for Monster Hunter Rise and Resident Evil Village in the works. Monster Hunter Rise has already received several updates since launch that were free. It’s possible that Capcom will continue to add some more free content before the release of Sunbreak such as new quests or the addition of new gear. Resident Evil Village has not had the same treatment though. At this time, it’s not known what kind of free DLC will be making its way to Resident Evil Village. Since DLC was confirmed to be in development back in July, many assumed the additional content will be paid. It's possible that both paid and free DLC is on the way.

This wouldn’t be the first time Resident Evil received free updates, though. Resident Evil 7 had the Not A Hero free DLC that saw players take control of Chris Redfield after the events of Resident Evil 7. It’s possible that the DLC for Resident Evil Village will also include something along these lines where Chris will once again become playable.

The announcement of free additional content for Resident Evil Village is exciting. Throughout the game, players take control of Ethan Winters, while Chris Redfield is embarking on his own quest in the background. If the free DLC has players take control of Chris Redfield again, this could potentially fill in the gaps on where he was and what he was doing while Ethan Winters is roaming the village.

Alternatively, towards the end of the game, several new plot points are revealed that could also be the focus of the additional content. That all being said, it’s not confirmed how large this free DLC for Resident Evil Village will be. Additionally, like Resident Evil 7, it’s more than likely that paid story DLCs will also be released for Resident Evil Village. A new announcement for Resident Evil is planned for today so it’s possible we’ll learn more soon.

Resident Evil Village is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
