In the universe of Resident Evil, it seems as if there are no limits to the strange things that players encounter game after game. Each time fans think have the story figured out, Capcom throws another huge twist and defies everyone's expectations.

Despite how fresh each installment of the series feels, it's always hard to fool dedicated fans. After the cinematic trailer's release, fans everywhere were quick to throw out all the off-the-wall theories they had. Although some were debunked, others ended up being eerily accurate. Here are a few theories about Resident Evil Village that fans got right.

Disclaimer: Major story and gameplay spoilers ahead!

8 Mia Isn't Really Dead

resident evil village what happens to mia

It's no spoiler that Mia (supposedly) dies in Resident Evil Village. Mia's death even featured in trailers for the game well before its official release. At the beginning of the story, poor Ethan only manages a few minutes of a normal life before his world gets turned upside down again.

Despite witnessing Chris viciously gunning down Mia at the beginning of the game, players weren't quite convinced. Although Mia seemed to have taken some damage, players had a sneaking suspicion that Mia was somehow still alive. It seems as if the fans had it all figured out right off the bat. It turns out that the "Mia" killed in the opening of the game was actually Mother Miranda in disguise.

7 Ethan Dies At The End

Resident Evil 8 Ethan Winters Grave

When Capcom unveiled the newest Resident Evil, the tagline for the continuation of Ethan's journey was "his story comes to a close". Fans speculated that ominous phrase could mean one of two things: Either Chris Redfield dies, or Ethan Winters does. Between the two, fans felt that Capcom was much less likely to kill off such an iconic character like the famous, boulder-punching Chris.

Fans were dead on with this theory about Ethan. However a twist of events revealed that Ethan has actually been "dead" since the events of Resident Evil 7. While Ethan was in fact reanimated with the help of the infectious mold, he does eventually finish his chapter with the sacrifice he made to save his family.

(However, the post-credits scene does open the door for Ethan's possible comeback.)

6 Chris Isn't Actually Evil

Apparently, the attempt to make Chris Redfield look like a villain was transparent for dedicated Resident Evil fans. There's no way the Chris everyone knows and loves would end up being the game's main antagonist. Sure, he's been trying to win the long war against bioweapons for years, but there's no way he could be jaded enough to suddenly kill an innocent woman.

The fans were right. Later in the game, Chris finally comes clean and reveals that he intended to get rid of the imposter Mia (a.k.a. Mother Miranda), not Ethan's loving wife. Perhaps Chris should have sent Ethan a "heads up" text, before making him think he had become a cruel villain for more than half the story.

5 Lady Dimitrescu Has A Horrifying Final Form

As unfortunate as it is, the beautiful Lady Dimitrescu does have a final form. She finally shows her true colors after being stabbed by a poisonous dagger. Despite her popularity across the internet, a good amount of skeptics believed that Lady Dimitrescu's beauty wouldn't last very long.

Despite her first appearance taking everyone's breath away, fans were right to doubt Lady Dimitrescu's stunning looks. Much like many other infected humans and bosses in the series, the Countess eventually begins to mutate into something much more sinister. As expected, Lady Dimitrescu does in fact fully transform into a terrible monster before meeting her demise.

4 Umbrella's Origins Will Be Revealed

The Village family crest with the Umbrella logo - Resident Evil 8 And RE 7 Connections

It seemed a bit strange how often the Umbrella logo appeared in the trailers for the game. After all, this game takes place in a very old village far away from any laboratories. Because of this, fans felt Capcom was hinting at unveiling even more of the history of Umbrella. Perhaps they'd get a glimpse as far back as the company's origins.

Sure enough, near the end of the game, the player gets a big info dump in Mother Miranda's lab. It is there they learn that Oswell Spencer, the founder of Umbrella, was actually a student of Mother Miranda. Furthermore, Spencer took the inspiration for his future company's logo from this very village.

3 Rose & Eveline Are Connected

Resident Evil 7 And 8 Rose And Eveline

The idea of having a baby together after the traumatic events of Resident Evil 7 did seem like it would end in nothing but trouble. Eveline insisted that Mia and Ethan take on the roles of her parents, and even threatened to kill them if they refused. With this in mind, the birth of Rose seemed like it would bring back some horrible memories of Louisiana back in 2017.

Since Mia had been previously infected and Ethan was almost completely comprised of mold, baby Rose was clearly a mutated human herself. Eveline ended up being a failed version of the "perfect" B.O.W and Rose was meant to be reincarnated as Eva, the perfected version of Eveline. Both Rose and Eveline were bioweapons that had some kind of connection to or control over the infectious Mold.

2 The Old Lady Is Actually Mother Miranda

Many players found the "Old Hag" that wanders around the village suspicious from the very start. Some fans were quick to get their guesses out there. Among the many theories, the one that the Old Hag was actually Mother Miranda the entire time was spot on.

After the surprise of Eveline being the "grandma" in the Baker household the entire time, fans weren't shocked that Mother Miranda turned out to be a shapeshifter by the end of the game. As a means to keep an eye on Ethan or push him in the right direction, Miranda disguised herself as a crazy old lady. She subtly ensured everything unfolded according to her plan for the ceremony.

1 Gamers Get To Play As Chris

Resident Evil 8 Chris In Tactical Gear Playable

This particular theory was less about the question of "Will there be a second player character" and more about "Who will the second character be?" Many of the newer Resident Evil games feature sections in which the player takes control of a new character, usually near the last few hours of the game.

Fans speculated that Chris Redfield would eventually become playable at some point in Village. Once again, Capcom couldn't fool their devoted fanbase. Efter Ethan's supposed end, the player takes over as Chris to help finish Mother Miranda once and for all.
