Here is what happens to Ethan Winters in Resident Evil Village.

Revelations About His Past

Near the end of Resident Evil Village, Ethan Winters gets into a confrontation with Mother Miranda. Even though Ethan was able to defeat Mother Miranda's lords, he finds her to be a significantly more formidable opponent. Miranda is able to make short work of Ethan, ripping his heart out and leaving him for dead. Chris Redfield witnesses this and believes Ethan to legitimately be dead, but it's soon revealed that isn't the case.

A little bit later on, Chris finds Ethan's missing wife Mia, and she explains that Ethan has special powers brought on by the black mold. It seems that Ethan actually died at the beginning of Resident Evil 7 when he was attacked by Jack Baker, but the black mold revived him and has kept him "alive" all this time. This explains why Ethan Winters has such incredible healing abilities and how he has been able to survive things that would have easily killed other humans.

Ethan Dies

Despite Ethan's regenerative abilities, his second fight with Mother Miranda proves to be too much for him. Ethan's body starts to deteriorate after the battle, and so he decides to stay behind, giving his daughter Rose to Chris Redfield. As Chris, Rose, and Mia escape on a helicopter, Ethan detonates the explosives that Chris left on the Megamycete (a heart-like blob of flesh that originally produced the black mold), presumably killing himself in the process.

Resident Evil Village then declares that "The father's story is done," and so it's assumed that Resident Evil 9 will focus on Ethan's daughter Rose instead.

Resident Evil Village is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
