Resident Evil Village released just this past weekend, but it's safe to say that many hardcore Resident Evil fans have likely made their way through the game already. Like most other games in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil Village is a relatively short game, with players able to complete it fairly easily in under 10 hours. That being said, those who have completed it may still have some questions about what exactly happened during the end.
Those who haven't played Resident Evil Village may also be curious about how the game's story plays out and what happens during the ending. After all, Capcom created a lot of questions for fans with Resident Evil Village's pre-release trailers, and so many may be wondering what exactly happens in the game.
Here is a full explanation of Resident Evil Village's ending and what it means for the Resident Evil franchise as a whole. Be warned that this article will have MAJOR SPOILERS for Resident Evil Village, so anyone that doesn't want to know what happens should come back after they've finished the story.
The Ending
After Ethan Winters successfully defeats Mother Miranda's four lords, he is confronted by Miranda herself. Despite his proven capabilities, Ethan is no match for Miranda, who rips out his heart and seemingly kills him. Chris Redfield sees this happen and finally launches an all-out assault with his team on the village in an effort to take out Miranda. BSAA, the organization that Chris used to work for in previous games, arrives on the scene as well.
Chris manages to locate the Megamycete, which is a large, fleshy, heart-like object that gave Mother Miranda her abilities. Chris rigs the Megamycete with explosives and then finds Miranda's lab. It's here where Chris finds Mia Winters and makes some startling revelations about how the events of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, and the black mold that came from the Megamycete, have long had an impact on the series' ongoing story.
Basically, Chris Redfield discovers that Miranda's daughter Eva died from the Spanish flu. Sometime after that, Miranda was able to give herself immortality using the mold, and then set out to find a host that she could use to revive her dead daughter. It's also revealed that she mentored Oswell E. Spencer, Umbrella's founder, and ultimately is the one that inspired him to pursue the T-Virus.
Regardless, Miranda's crusade to find a host for her daughter is what led to the creation of Resident Evil Village's various monsters, and what ultimately drew her to kidnapping Ethan's daughter Rose in the first place. Both Mia and Ethan were exposed to the black mold during the events of Resident Evil 7, and so Rose has been born with special powers. Miranda believes that Rose's abilities will make her a suitable candidate for Eva.
As it so happens, Rose isn't the only one with special abilities. It's also revealed that Ethan Winters himself also has powers from the mold. Apparently, Ethan was killed by Jack Baker during the events of Resident Evil 7, only to be revived by the mold. Since then, Ethan has been technically dead, but is able to regenerate himself due to the abilities granted to him by the mold and the Megamycete.
Ethan is rescued by The Duke, Resident Evil Village's take on RE4's Merchant, and has a final showdown with Mother Miranda. Ethan manages to defeat Miranda, but he is badly wounded in the fight and can no longer be saved by his black mold abilities. Realizing that he is going to die, Ethan entrusts Rose with Chris, who escapes with everyone on a helicopter. Ethan stays behind to detonate the bombs Chris planted on the Megamycete earlier, killing himself and destroying the village in the process.
While escaping on the helicopter, Chris realizes that the BSAA "soldiers" that arrived were actually bioweapons. Enraged and confused, Chris then asks the helicopter to take them to the BSAA's headquarters in Europe, where he will presumably confront the organization and investigate why they are now apparently dealing with bioweapons.
After Credits Scene
Players are treated to a message that says "The father's story is done," but there's still an after-credits scene to witness. At the very end of Resident Evil Village, players see a much older Rose visiting Ethan's grave. This version of Rose appears to be a teenager, suggesting that there was a time skip of some kind after the end of Resident Evil Village, though considering Rose's black mold abilities, it's also possible that she simply ages faster than regular people.
It seems Rose's abilities are being utilized by Chris Redfield and whatever organization he works for because she is taken away from Ethan's grave to go on a mission. She makes mention that Chris doesn't know all of her capabilities, though it seems as though Resident Evil fans will have to wait until the next game to find out more.
