Resident Evil Resistance is set to launch alongside Resident Evil 3, providing players with a side multiplayer game that puts them in the shoes of survivors and a villainous Mastermind alike. One of these survivors has now been revealed by Capcom, and he has an unusual name that's likely a callback to Resident Evil history.

Resident Evil Resistance was originally revealed by leaks back in August, with no information at the time of when it would release. That's since been amended with the Resident Evil 3 Remake trailer, which revealed that Resistance would be included with Resident Evil 3 as a free add-on.

Capcom has now revealed the survivors who will be battling the Mastermind, including one named Martin Sandwich. The survivor has unique skills as an engineer, with the ability to build traps that can stun enemies. His surname isn't entirely unheard of, but it's likely a callback to the iconic 'Jill Sandwich' joke. For those not in the know, in the original version of Resident Evil, after Jill Valentine is nearly crushed by a trap, Barry Burton jokingly notes that she was nearly a Jill Sandwich. The line has lived on in infamy since along with many other of the odd dialogue choices, like 'Master of Unlocking.'

While it's unlikely that the character Martin Sandwich has any actual connection to Jill Valentine, it's also unlikely that the name choice is accidental. The Jill Sandwich joke has been amusing to fans for years, and Capcom itself has embraced it on numerous occasions. The Jill Sandwich joke has shown up in Dead Rising, Resident Evil 0 Remastered in the form of a custom outfit for Rebecca Chambers, and even in Resident Evil Revelations 2, where Claire Redfield rephrases the joke, apparently having heard it from Barry at some point.

For now, gamers will have to wait and see if there are any other sandwich jokes at Jill's expense in the game. Since she makes her return in Resident Evil 3, it's possible that the developers slid in an extra joke somewhere, especially since it seems that the Resident Evil 3 Remake may be expanding the game's original story. While most players are probably looking forward to additional gameplay time and lore building, there will likely be room for a Jill Sandwich joke or two, too.

Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil Resistance are set to release on April 3, 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
