The official Sony Pictures Instagram page has confirmed that the new Resident Evil movie reboot has completed filming. The movie, announced earlier this year, started filming in October 2020 and is set to be released September 9, 2021.

Directed by Johannes Roberts, this latest adaptation of the Resident Evil games has added several well-known actors to the cast, including Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, and Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine.

The reboot is set to be a more accurate adaptation of the video games than the previous series of films. Set photos that appeared online during production confirmed that the movie would be featuring well-known locations from the games, such as Emmy's Diner and Kendo's Gun Shop. Additionally, concept art for the film has provided a glimpse at what a zombie will look like in the upcoming movie. However, further plot details and exactly how the series of games will be adapted have yet to be revealed.

While the original Resident Evil movie was popular, spawning five sequels, it was only very loosely based on the video games. The lead character, Alice, was created for the movies. Milla Jovovich will not be returning as Alice for the reboot, although she would be open to returning to the franchise. Despite their popularity, many longtime fans of Resident Evil criticized the movies for being too far removed from the plot of the games. The reboot will give fans a chance to see characters they know and love from the games come to life on the big screen.

This movie isn't the only Resident Evil adaptation in the works. Netflix has released a trailer for an animated series based on the games entitled Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and has also announced that a live-action TV series about the Wesker twins is in development. On top of that, the next game in the very popular franchise, Resident Evil 8, will also be released in 2021. Between the TV shows, the film, and the game, 2021 is shaping up to be a massive year for the franchise and its fans.

The new Resident Evil movie is set to be released September 9, 2021.
