The Resident Evil franchise hasn’t had much of a history with portable gaming, but Capcom is actively working to change this. After their success with Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, they are determined to deliver not one, but two quality 3DS releases with Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and Resident Evil: Revelations.

With The Mercenaries 3D, Capcom is taking the ‘Mercenaries’ bonus mode originally from Resident Evil 4 and re-crafting it into a stand-alone game. Instead of offering merely a port or rehash, Capcom is adding many features to make the game fresh and worthwhile – even for those who have played the mode in previous games.

In a recent blog post, Capcom confirmed a number of features that are to be included in the game. Check out the list.

  • Resident Evil: Revelations demo included.
  • 1 or 2 players — Ad Hoc and Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.
  • 30 missions of intense Mercenaries action.
  • In depth skill and abilities unlock system that encourages and rewards replaying. Skills and abilities include health, weapons damage, customization etc.

Listing a demo at the top of a feature list is strange. The inclusion of the demo is great, but I’m not sure it deserves to be listed as a feature for the game. That’s grasping for things to list, no? Regardless, the rest of the features give a good idea of what to expect and appear promising.

Including cooperative gameplay in The Mercenaries 3D is sure to increase the replay value of the game and offer an exciting alternative to a mostly single player oriented game. It worked wonderfully in Resident Evil 5 on the consoles so we hope the same for the handheld co-op. Additionally, Capcom claims there will be 30 intense missions. This is a fairly large amount if gamers factor in the arcade style aspects of the game that strongly encourage repeating missions to earn a better score.

The skill and ability system, briefly shown off in the trailer, allows players to tweak their characters in many ways. Before each mission, players will be able to choose three skills (from an eventual total of 30) that each aid in different areas such as health, damage, and weapon customization. This added skill system has the potential to drastically increase the game’s value for players that enjoy spending time making sure they unlock everything.

Along with the new trailer, Capcom has also released a number of new screenshots. Check them out below:

Based on these new details, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is shaping up to be one of the first must-own titles for the 3DS. The gameplay lends itself well to short bursts of play time, which is perfect for handheld gaming. Besides, fighting off 3D zombies with the help of a friend is hard to beat.

Is The Mercenaries 3D on track to becoming a must-own 3DS title?

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is slated for release sometime this summer on the Nintendo 3DS.
