The following contains spoilers for Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness packs a lot of information in its four-episode run. The series covers many locations, from the White House to Shanghai, and adds new characters to keep track of. With so many threads wrapping up so quickly at the end, fans might have missed the whole story. So where does the series leave the world and its beloved characters?

The key to understanding the series’ entire plot is through White House Secretary of Defense Wilson. Wilson begins the series blaming China for a recent hack on the United States. Why is he so committed to this cause? In the final episode, it is revealed that Wilson wanted to spark a war between the US and China (which borders the infamous Penamstan) so a new strain of the Progenitor virus from six years prior could be released.

After the “Mad Dogs” incident, the potential virus release would now reach outside Penamstan’s borders and spread all over the world. With the population infected with the virus, a cure would be a miracle and a lucrative one at that. This is where Wilson’s “virus inhibitor” enters the conversation, the same one that Jason took so he wouldn’t turn into a bioweapon himself. Wilson planned on getting out of the conflict scot-free and instead become the savior to mankind, all while making millions for him and his friends at pharmaceutical corporations.

Though, in the series’ final moments with Wilson, viewers learn that what goes around comes around and that Wilson himself is now infected with the virus he wished to inflict on others. What shocks more is the container the inhibitor comes in, marked with a logo for a company called Tricell. Fans who have played Resident Evil 5 will recognize the name of the pharmaceutical company that worked with Albert Wesker and later caused the outbreak in Kijuju.

Jason, the “hero of Penamstan” and member of the “Mad Dogs” unit, is fueled by his hatred for Secretary Wilson. The long-running plan he created with the help of Shen Mei was focused on uncovering proof that Wilson was to blame for the incident in Penamstan. The attack on the submarine to Shanghai in the second episode is planned by Jason and Shen Mei in an attempt to fake their deaths while killing Leon S. Kennedy in the process. Unfortunately, Leon catches on to their plan and forces the two to take him with them to Shanghai.

It’s only later that Jason’s true plan is revealed — he wants to transform into the monster Wilson made him be and show it to the world in hopes of taking down Wilson and pharmaceutical companies. If he had been successful in his attempt, Jason would have exposed the connection between bioweapons and pharmaceutical companies for the first time in Resident Evil history (up until this point in the timeline, all incidents have been covered up, including Raccoon City.) Sadly, Shen Mei is killed by Jason after his truth is revealed in the underground facility, while Jason himself is taken down by Leon and Claire Redfield.

Multiple characters from Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness

With its more dialogue-driven form, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness ends with a final conversation between Leon and Claire outside of the White House. While Jason and Shen Mei are gone, there’s still a chance to complete their work with the chip Leon took from them. Loaded with incriminating evidence, the chip could expose the government’s involvement in bioweapons. Claire, who works for the human rights group TerraSave, wants to get the chip’s information into the public’s hands, but Leon refuses to hand over the chip. This is probably due to Leon’s deep allegiance to the White House — specifically to President Graham, who made him an agent after the events of Resident Evil 4 and his rescue of Graham’s daughter, Ashley. He knows that news of a high-ranking official in the White House conspiring to make bioweapons would damage the U.S’ reputation. The decision shocks Claire, who realizes the Leon she met in Resident Evil 2 has changed drastically in the years they’ve spent apart.

So what comes after the series? Set in 2006, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is only a few years before the events of Resident Evil 5 and can lead pretty seamlessly into the plot of the game. When it comes to Leon and Claire, neither return in Resident Evil 5. Leon remains an agent for the president and teams up with Helena Harper to stop another outbreak in Resident Evil 6, while Claire continues her work for Terrasave and is last seen in Resident Evil: Revelations 2 on Sejm Island with Barry Burton’s daughter, Moira.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is now streaming on Netflix.
