Resident Evil is considered by many to be one of the most legendary survival horror titles of all time. While Resident Evil 5 & 6 might've led to the series facing a bit of an identity crisis as it chose to focus more on action as opposed to horror, Resident Evil 7 marked a much-welcome shift in the series as the series finally drifted back to its original horror roots...and became all the more popular, as a result. One need only look at the massive hype surrounding Resident Evil 8 to understand just how beloved this franchise has become once again as a result of this tonal shift.

So, it's only a given that horror game fans who loved the recent Resident Evil titles would obviously want more games in the same vein that would scare the player out of their wits while someone keeping them glued to the screen at the same time. Keeping this in mind, here are ten such horror masterpieces for anyone even remotely into the Resident Evil series.

10 SOMA

A survival-horror game that will test a player's insistence on uncovering a brilliant narrative at cost of soiling their pants over and over again, SOMA is genuinely a must-play for any fan of the survival horror genre.

Roaming around a remote underwater facility that's full to the brim with monsters is not an entertaining prospect in the slightest, making SOMA a harrowing experience that is also pretty entertaining to boot.

9 Devotion

Devotion

It's a shame that Devotion has been delisted from most platforms since the game tells a brilliant tale that uses the normal depiction of a family and twists it into something truly horrific.

The idea of a child being tortured by her father into doing his bidding sounds way more horrifying than any supernatural threat. This is why Devotion is easily one of the greatest survival horror games of all time.

8 Condemned: Criminal Origins

Condemned: Criminal Origins

While Condemned: Criminal Origins is definitely a great game in its own right, the horror of this game isn't even the best part of the title. Rather, it's the emphasis on an excellent combat system that keeps things fresh at every step of the way.

Taking on the role of Ethan Thomas, players navigate the seedy underbelly of the city of Metro as they fight a large number of psychotics that are hell-bent on stopping Ethan for reasons that are unknown.

7 Dead Space

Dead Space

It's a shame that Visceral Studios has gone defunct since the developer was known for publishing one of the greatest sci-fi horror titles of all time — Dead Space.

The idea of roaming around a desolate space station and dealing with the horrific necromorphs that lie within is anything but alluring. And yet, the brilliant atmosphere of Dead Space coupled with an excellent plot will keep fans hooked to their screens until the story of Isaac Clarke finally reaches a rather jarring climax.

6 Outlast

Outlast

Upon release, Outlast quickly became one of the most popular horror titles around, with the sheer amount of content from this game floating around being nothing short of remarkable.

However, unlike other horror games in the same vein that relied upon shock value to scare players, it's the build-up of tension coupled with some heart-pounding chase sequences that make Outlast such a brilliant title. Even a lackluster ending doesn't ruin the game.

5 Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

One of the few horror titles released for the Gamecube, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is a brilliant psychological horror game that should be played by any fan of excellent and creative horror titles.

The highlight of the game is undoubtedly the Sanity mechanic, with the fourth wall being broken down constantly by the game when the player's sanity has dwindled extensively. It's a unique mechanic that allows for some of the most memorable moments in the game.

4 Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares - protagonist hiding

Little Nightmares is a brilliant title that players should try out if they're a fan of atmospheric horror platformers. While the game might not be all that long, this title leaves such a strong impression that the campaign's short length isn't a huge issue.

Controlling Six as she deals with the horrors that plague a child's nightmares is an unforgettable experience. Most fans would probably jump at the chance to play the sequel right after they're done with this brilliant title.

3 Pathologic

Pathologic

With the release of Pathologic 2 and the boundless potential that it showed, it's a boon that more and more fans are finally playing the first game in the series. Pathologic is easily one of the oddest yet brilliant games ever made.

Pathologic is quite hard to explain — while the player does take on the role of several people in the middle of a deadly plague, the actual plot runs so much thicker and deeper than that. It's a game that needs to be played firsthand to be experienced properly since mere explanations won't do it justice.

2 P.T.

It's a shame that Kojima was booted out of Konami before his idea for Silent Hills could become a reality. After all, if P.T. was anything to go by, then Silent Hills could've been one of the greatest horror titles of all time.

Short for "Playable Teaser," P.T. uses a unique mechanic of a person going through the same looping corridor over and over again while the horrifying Lisa hounds the player at every step of the way.

1 Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2

When one talks about the Silent Hill series, it would be impossible to not mention one of the greatest games of all time – Silent Hill 2.

Featuring what is considered by many to be an example of psychological horror at its best, Silent Hill 2 sets the bar for what an immersive video game can accomplish. Complex, intense, and unpredictable, Silent Hill 2 is a game that must be played by horror fans.
