The Resident Evil franchise has grown significantly since it first debuted 25 years ago. Resident Evil Village is the most confident the series has ever been and is an accumulation of everything the license is known for. Fortunately, Capcom has no intention of stopping there as the Japanese giant has already hinted at making Resident Evil an annual franchise.

While details are pretty scarce about Resident Evil's future, particularly the next mainline entry, Capcom has revealed quite a few things related to the survival horror franchise. Furthermore, leaks released in 2021 shed some light on a few unconfirmed Resident Evil projects that might be in development. Here's every single one of them.

Updated June 14, 2022 by Mark Sammut: Resident Evil has enjoyed a fruitful couple of years, producing great games that cater to old-school and modern fans of the franchise. At any given moment, one can assume that Capcom has a few RE fires burning, a fact reinforced during the publisher's showcase on June 13, 2022. This article has been expanded to include all upcoming Resident Evil games confirmed to be in development, along with some rumored projects.

During the company's showcase, Capcom announced Resident Evil Village's Winters' Expansion, a package that will bring three additions to the base game.

Shadows Of Rose

Shadows of Rose takes place after the main story and gives players control of Ethan's daughter, the eponymous Rose. The DLC's trailer shows an older Rose returning to the titular village and interacting with a range of strange entities, including someone who looks a lot like the protagonist. Rose seems to be searching for a way to get rid of her powers, at least by the information revealed for the expansion so far. Shadows of Rose will be played in third-person, unlike the main game.

The Mercenaries Additional Orders

Mercenaries mode is already part of Resident Evil Village, but Additional Orders looks set to expand on the experience in a few key ways. Along with introducing new stages to the arcade-style mode, Additional Orders will also add a few playable characters, including Alcina Dimitrescu.

Third-Person Support

The Winters' Expansion will make it possible for the base game to be played in third-person, delivering something closer to the classic Resident Evil formula.

Announced: Resident Evil Village Gold Edition

Players who already own Resident Evil Village can pick up the Winters' Expansion on its own; however, people who have yet to invest in the game have the option to pick up the Gold Edition on October 28, 2022. This comes with the base game, the expansion, and Resident Evil Re:Verse.

Announced: Resident Evil Re:Verse

Release Date

October 28, 2022

Platforms

PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One

The asymmetrical multiplayer counterpart of Resident Evil Village, Re:Verse was supposed to launch alongside the main game but was delayed due to the plethora of game-breaking bugs found in its public beta test. Capcom has since then announced that Re:Verse will launch on October 28, 2022 alongside Village's Winters' Expansion.

The multiplayer stages Deathmatches pitting together popular characters from across the franchise as they fight to get the most points. Fallen heroes even transform into bioweapons that can take out other players. The game will be free for anyone who owns Resident Evil Village.

Announced: Resident Evil 4 Remake

Release Date

March 24, 2023

Platforms

PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S

At June 2022's State of Play event, Capcom confirmed that Resident Evil 4's remake is on the way, announcing a release date of March 24, 2023. The horror game will be coming out on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. This project has been subjected to rumors for a long time, basically since the release of the Resident Evil 3 remake.

Going by the remake's trailer, this version might have a darker tone than the 2005 game, and that goes beyond just the photo-realistic visuals shown off so far. RE4 follows Leon as he goes on a mission to rescue Ashley, the daughter of the United States president, who is being held captive in a village in Spain. Unlike Resident Evil 2 and 3, the fourth main game is not that dated visually, with the seventh generation remaster being perfectly acceptable in that department. However, RE4's gameplay could certainly benefit from some modernization.

Announced: Resident Evil Village VR

At State of Play June 2022, Capcom also revealed that Resident Evil Village will be released for PS VR2, following in the footsteps of Resident Evil 7. While discussions concerning the headset have been picking up steam in recent months, Sony has yet to reveal the headset's release date.

As RE7 is one of the best VR experiences on Sony's current headset, there is a lot of hype surrounding Village's potential. Capcom has confirmed that the port will cover the full game, introducing a new way to play through this solid entry in the publisher's storied franchise. Village is a bit more action-oriented than RE7, but the eighth mainline entry still has plenty of genuine scares and terrifying locations, both of which should be enhanced when presented in virtual reality.

Rumor: Resident Evil Outbreak/Outrage/Revelations 3

resident evil revelations and rebecca chambers

Capcom's data breach from last year revealed several Resident Evil games that are currently in development. One that's intended to release after Resident Evil Village is something called Resident Evil Outbreak. Aside from a Q4 2021 release window, nothing else was included in the leak. Although Resident Evil Outbreak was a no-show at E3 2021, multiple industry insiders have revealed promising details about the game, which makes this leak all the more legitimate.

The notable Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem was the first to go into details. According to him, Resident Evil Outbreak is Resident Evil Revelations 3, featuring a returning Rebecca Chambers as the main protagonist, with Leon S. Kennedy rumored to be also a playable character. The game could also be a timed Nintendo Switch exclusive. This would fit the Revelations 3 rumor as that subseries started out on the Nintendo 3DS, and its episodic format would complement the Switch's portability. Revelations and its sequel are also available on the Switch.

This project has also gone by the title of Resident Evil Outrage.

Rumor: Biohazard Apocalypse

Biohazard Apocalypse is the next Resident Evil game in line, according to the leaked report, and is scheduled to release in Q3 2023. Now, this rumor has not garnered too much steam since its original leak, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, Capcom will eventually release a Resident Evil 9, and it wouldn't be surprising at all if the company is already working on the project; consequently, there is a chance that Apocalypse is the game's codename.

Biohazard is the Japanese name for the Resident Evil series, so it could be that this title is exclusive to Japan. The chances of that happening is pretty slim as Resident Evil has garnished a massive global audience in the last two decades. Resident Evil Village became the fastest-selling game in the franchise, and it's unlikely for Capcom to hinder its own momentum by making Biohazard Apocalypse exclusive to Japan.

Rumor: Resident Evil: Hank

Hunk aiming a weapon - Resident Evil Hunk Facts

Resident Evil Hank is the last of the leaked Resident Evil games that surfaced, though it won't be reportedly seeing daylight until Q4 2024. It could very well be referring to Hunk, the enigmatic mercenary that first appeared in Resident Evil 2. The alleged Resident Evil Hank could finally explore this mysterious yet popular RE character, though it will be a while before fans get any sort of info on this project.
