After about a year of waiting, Resident Evil fans can finally get their hands on the latest game in the long-running survival-horror franchise, Resident Evil VillageResident Evil Village has earned strong reviews from critics and is being hailed by many as a worthy successor to Resident Evil 7, but now Resident Evil fans may be wondering what they have to look forward to now that Village is out.

It's no secret that Resident Evil Village is a short game, as most Resident Evil games tend to be on the shorter side. One potential downside to this is that players may finish the games quickly and be left wanting more. Luckily for Resident Evil fans, there are plenty of new games and other projects on the horizon to look forward to, with at least some of them even pegged for release later this year.

With 2021 marking the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise, Capcom is going all out with video games, movies, and more. The first piece of that puzzle was Resident Evil Village, and now that it's out, fans can look ahead to what's next for the Resident Evil franchise in 2021 and beyond. Here's everything Resident Evil fans have in store in the year ahead, along with stuff that has been leaked by reputable sources.

Resident Evil Re:Verse

Resident Evil Re Verse

Originally slated to launch alongside Resident Evil VillageResident Evil Re:Verse is a new multiplayer game based on the franchise. There were numerous technical issues with Resident Evil Re:Verse's beta, and so it's possible those problems have played a role in the game being delayed to an undetermined point this summer. Regardless, anyone that owns Resident Evil Village will get the chance to try Resident Evil Re:Verse for themselves whenever it does release.

For the uninitiated, Resident Evil Re:Verse is a six player versus multiplayer mode where players take on the role of various characters from the Resident Evil series. The gimmick of Resident Evil Re:Verse is that players have the opportunity to transform into bioweapons like Nemesis or Jack Baker when they die. Whether or not this latest attempt by Capcom to make a Resident Evil multiplayer game pays off or not remains to be seen, but fans will find out more when Resident Evil Re:Verse launches this summer.

Resident Evil Netflix and Movie Projects

Resident Evil Infinite Darkness Netflix Claire Redfield Leon S. Kennedy

While many Resident Evil fans may be most concerned with the Resident Evil video games that are in development, others may be looking forward to the TV and movie projects that are in the works as well. As it so happens, video streaming giant Netflix has two Resident Evil projects in active development, one of which is canon to the video games and the other which is more of departure from what fans may expect.

First off, Resident Evil fans can look forward to Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness launching on Netflix at some point in July 2021. Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is the latest CG Resident Evil project, though this time it will be in the form of a series instead of a movie. In Infinite Darkness, viewers will witness a biohazard incident at the White House after the events of Resident Evil 4. Fan favorite characters Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield will be the starring characters in the series.

Another Resident Evil Netflix series is in development, though it's unclear if it will be canon to the games or not. This live-action Resident Evil Netflix series will reportedly be about Albert Wesker's kids, showing their lives in the present day as well as what their lives were like growing up. This is quite the departure from what fans would usually expect from a Resident Evil series, so it will be interesting to see how they react to it.

And finally, Resident Evil fans have the live-action Resident Evil movie reboot to look forward to, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The film is looking to adapt the storylines of both the original Resident Evil game as well as Resident Evil 2, featuring the infamous mansion along with Raccoon City. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City set photos have been promising, but it's too early to say at this point if the Resident Evil movie reboot film will be any better than the previous attempts at making live-action Resident Evil movies. Fans will find out when Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City hits theaters on November 24, 2021.

Resident Evil 4 VR and Remake

One of the most popular Resident Evil games is easily Resident Evil 4, which has stood the test of time as one of the highest-rated video games ever produced. Considering Resident Evil 4's popularity, it's no surprise that Capcom has made it its mission to port the game to as many platforms as possible. Resident Evil 4 is readily available on nearly every modern gaming platform, including mobile devices. The game has also had some more creative ports, like the Resident Evil 4 Wii port that added motion controls, which was very well-received by the Resident Evil community.

Now Capcom is taking Resident Evil 4 in a much different direction. It was recently confirmed that a VR version of Resident Evil 4 is in development as an Oculus Quest 2 exclusive. The Resident Evil 4 VR game is expected to retain much of the content of the original Resident Evil 4 game, but it will run on Unreal Engine 4 and use a first-person perspective instead of the classic third-person, over-the-shoulder view that the 2005 version originated.

While some hardcore Resident Evil fans may not be all that interested in a VR version of Resident Evil 4, they may be interested in the leaked Resident Evil 4 remake that's supposedly in development. The Capcom ransomware attack has seemingly confirmed what reputable leakers have already revealed, and that is a full-fledged Resident Evil 4 remake is in development. The belief is that the game will launch at some point in 2022 or maybe 2023, but fans should standby for an official reveal before they get too excited.

Resident Evil: Outrage

Speaking of Resident Evil leaks, it seems as though a Nintendo Switch exclusive Resident Evil game may be in development as well. Reputable leakers and the Capcom ransomware attack suggest that a project going by the working title of Resident Evil: Outrage is in development for the Nintendo Switch with a possible release of late 2021. Fans should take this information with a grain of salt until Capcom officially reveals the game, but rumors point to Resident Evil: Outrage starring Rebecca Chambers.

Capcom has shown huge support for the Switch so far, releasing Monster Hunter: Rise as a Switch exclusive earlier this year. And considering Capcom's history of releasing Nintendo exclusive Resident Evil games means it's pretty easy to believe that the Resident Evil: Outrage game is real. If it is real and it is aiming for release in late 2021, maybe Resident Evil fans will get lucky and Nintendo will announce the project at E3 2021 next month.

Resident Evil 9

Capcom has not officially announced Resident Evil 9, but it is an inevitability. The Resident Evil franchise remains one of Capcom's top properties, and Resident Evil Village is already a big success. Rumors and leaks point to Resident Evil 9 finishing the story that started in Resident Evil 7, so those that have already played through Resident Evil Village may have a decent idea of where the story could go.

However, with numerous other Resident Evil projects already confirmed or leaked to be coming first, fans shouldn't expect any concrete details on Resident Evil 9 for years.
