The original Resident Evil game is a landmark release for the industry, spawning one of its longest and most successful franchises and influencing numerous copycats. Capcom has capitalized on the popularity of the original Resident Evil game on many occasions, re-releasing it a number of times, porting it to various platforms, developing a full-fledged remake, remastering said remake, and more.

Now fans of the original Resident Evil have set about making their own remake of the game. Whereas Capcom's Resident Evil remake went for a photorealistic art style, this fan remake, dubbed Resident Evil 96 Edition, imitates the look for the PS1 release, but with higher definition graphics. As seen in the video uploaded to YouTube by BriinsCroft, this gives the characters a blocky appearance that is true to how their character models looked in 1996.

Resident Evil 96 Edition gives the original Resident Evil game a new camera perspective. Instead of the fixed camera angles that the original Resident Evil game used back in the day, it uses a third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective. It's basically a representation of what the original 1996 Resident Evil game would be like if it took its cues from Resident Evil 4's style of gameplay while retaining its art style. It's an interesting idea to say the least, and Resident Evil fans can check out a nearly six minute long trailer to get an idea of what it would be like.

Resident Evil fans that are feeling nostalgic for the original game after watching the trailer should note that Resident Evil: Director's Cut is available to play on PS4 and PS5 for those with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Resident Evil fans with other modern platforms will have to opt for Resident Evil HD Remaster, which is the high-def remaster of the 2002 Resident Evil remake that makes some significant visual enhancements and quality of life improvements.

As far as new Resident Evil games go, Capcom is preparing to cap off Resident Evil Village with a new expansion about Rose Winters set to drop this October. It also has the Resident Evil Re:Verse multiplayer game in the pipeline, and next year, fans can look forward to a full-fledged remake of Resident Evil 4. Beyond these projects, rumors from reputable sources indicate that Capcom is already in the midst of developing Resident Evil 9. According to the leaks, Resident Evil 9 will end the story that started with Resident Evil 7, but not much is known about the game in an official capacity.
