In a couple of months, survival-horror fans will be able to play Resident Evil Village (aka Resident Evil 8), which will usher the long-running franchise into the next-generation. But while Resident Evil Village isn't even out yet, it seems as though Capcom may have already started development on the next mainline entry in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 9.

This is according to AestheticGamer, who has accurately leaked Resident Evil news in the past. They claim that Capcom has already started development on Resident Evil 9, but that it's unlikely the game will release before 2024. The game is so early in development that "it's actually not worth even talking about right now" since the concept could change so drastically between now and when it's actually revealed to the public.

While Resident Evil 9 may be a few years away, fans of the franchise should have plenty to look forward to. As previously mentioned, Resident Evil Village is coming in May, and it will be launching alongside the Resident Evil Re:Verse multiplayer experience. And while no Resident Evil games beyond that have been announced in an official capacity, leaks have pointed to some of Capcom's future plans for the franchise.

According to various leaks, Capcom has another Resident Evil game launching in 2021. Apparently, a Resident Evil game for the Switch is going to launch at the end of the year, with the featured protagonist being series mainstay Rebecca Chambers. Whether or not this is true or not remains to be seen, but if the late 2021 release date is accurate, then fans of the Resident Evil franchise should get some answers sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, other leaks have suggested that a new Resident Evil game is coming in 2022 as well. If the rumors are to be believed, that game is none other than the Resident Evil 4 remake. However, it's also been suggested that there have been some creative disagreements on the Resident Evil 4 remake behind the scenes that have potentially pushed the game's release date to 2023 instead of 2022. But since the game hasn't even been announced yet, it's hard to say one way or the other.

The Resident Evil franchise is one of Capcom's biggest money-makers, and so fans can expect new games in the series to release on a regular basis for years to come. Resident Evil 9 has always been an inevitability, though fans should worry about Resident Evil VillageRe:Verse, and the rumored Resident Evil Switch game first.

Resident Evil 9 is reportedly in development for unspecified platforms.
