Resident Evil has always been one of the biggest horror franchises in gaming. In recent years, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 were well received by fans. A remake of Resident Evil 3 also released earlier this year but was not met with the same reception due to the lack of content the game offered.

Fans are highly anticipating the upcoming release of Resident Evil 8: Village. The game was first revealed back in June and a lot of information has been revealed since. However, fans also have a lot of questions that Capcom has yet to answer.

10 What We Learned: Setting

resident evil 8 castle village

As indicated by the title, the upcoming game takes place in a village. A castle and a forest can be seen surrounding the village in the trailers. There is a mysterious tale about a little girl who disappeared in the forest, which will probably play an important role in the story. The upcoming title takes place in the winter a few years after Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which makes sense as Ethan Winters is once again the main character. The series has always had haunted locations and this village will surely creep players out just as much, if not even more.

9 Question We Have: What Is Chris Doing?

history of chris redfield in resident evil

Chris Redfield is the main character of the series but he seems to be the antagonist of the upcoming game. He was one of the playable characters in the first game and has played an important role in the series since. In Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, he helped Ethan. However, it has been shown in the trailer for the upcoming release that Chris is going to kill Mia, Ethan's wife. Both Ethan and the fans don't understand why Chris would do this. Something very strange is going on here.

8 What We Learned: RE Engine

Capcom developed their own engine that they have been working with for a few years now. The RE Engine has been used for recent Resident Evil entries as well as Devil May Cry V. Capcom is using the RE Engine once again in Resident Evil: 8 Village, as it has shown to be very successful and is able to do a lot that their previous engine, the MT Framework, was unable to do.

7 Question We Have: Is There Multiplayer?

RE8 setting

In many Resident Evil games, players have been able to join each other in battle. However, there are also games in the franchise that are solely single-player experiences. As of right now, no multiplayer gameplay has been shown for Resident Evil 8: Village.

The only character that has been revealed to be playable so far is Ethan Winters. Though multiplayer gameplay hasn't been shown, Capcom may just be waiting to reveal that aspect of the game.

6 What We Learned: New Characters

Besides Ethan, Chris, and a few of the other characters, the trailers for the upcoming title have shown a lot of new people. There seems to be a cult in the village as many new faces are chanting while holding hands in a circle. There is also a tale about a little girl who ran away from her mother and got lost while picking berries for the girl's father. These new characters are very mysterious and creepy. However, as it seems that Chris may be the antagonist of this entry, the role that these new characters end up having is anyone's guess.

5 Question We Have: When Will It Release?

resident evil 8

This next installment of the franchise is set to release in 2021. However, as many games, as well as other forms of media including films and television programs, are being delayed due to COVID-19, Resident Evil 8: Village may end up being delayed as well.

Even if the game does release next year, fans are unsure of when it will be in the year. Hopefully, they will not have to wait until the end of 2021 or longer as the previous title, not including the remakes, was released at the very beginning of 2017.

4 What We Learned: Platforms

Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S

As the newest trailer was shown during the PlayStation 5 Showcase and the game was initially revealed during the PlayStation 5 Reveal Event, Resident Evil 8: Village will be releasing on the PS5. Xbox recently revealed the Xbox Series S, a smaller version of their next console. The game will also be releasing on both upcoming Xbox platforms, as well as PC. Console gamers will have to pick up one of the new consoles to play the game on.

3 Question We Have: Where Do Werewolves Come From?

It seems that werewolves are going to be common enemies found in the new title. Though this is not the first time such creatures have appeared in the franchise, little is known about them as they have never been involved with the story as much as Resident Evil 8: Village hints at. As a result, these enemies are very interesting and mysterious. The game will hopefully reveal why they are in this game and not in previous installments.

2 What We Learned: Similarities To Resident Evil 4

upcoming resident evil projects

Out of all the Resident Evil games, the upcoming title seems to be most similar to Resident Evil 4. After the President's daughter, Ashley, was kidnapped by Los Illuminados, Leon finds himself in a village to get her back. The residents of the village attack and imprison Leon. Upon escaping, he learns more about how his past is connected to the village's cult, as well as Ashley being kidnapped. Like Leon, Ethan now finds himself in a dangerous village with a cult. They also both have to face their pasts as their former comrades return and reveal themselves to not be the friends they once were. Resident Evil 8: Village's setting and plot seems to have a lot in common with Resident Evil 4.

1 Question We Have: What Impact Did Eveline Leave Behind?

RE7 Eveline

Eveline was the main antagonist of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and gave Ethan and Mia a lot of trouble. She can control others and give them hallucinations. Due to how powerful she was, it would not come as a surprise if she ended up leaving a strong impact on Ethan and Mia's lives. The events of that game will hopefully be important in who Ethan and Mia, despite the small role she'll probably have, are in Resident Evil 8: Village. After all, Eveline appeared as a young girl for the majority of the game who was obsessed with turning Mia into her mother and the upcoming game seems to have a heavy focus on another young girl and her family. If Eveline turns out to still haunt the Winters after all this time, it would show some really interesting character development and can even make the game creepier than it already seems.
