Reisdent Evil 8 is in development for PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett, reveals a new leak. Fans of the zombie horror series were excited when other rumors suggested that Capcom is developing a Resident Evil 3 remake, but many wondered when they'd get to play a new game in the main series.

On Twitter, prominent Resident Evil leaker EVIL VR said that the Resident Evil 3 remake would be the last game in the series for PS4 and Xbox One. However, while Resident Evil fans shouldn't expect Resident Evil 8 "soon," the leaker did confirm that the game is in development for PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett. The game was "always planned" to release on these consoles, said EVIL VR, and that the game will be using the updated version of the Resident Evil game engine.

One change to the engine is that it now supports cel-shaded graphics, though it seems unlikely that Resident Evil 8 will offer that. EVIL VR also revealed that the engine is "optimized" for mobile devices such as iOS, Android, and the Nintendo Switch. After the success of Resident Evil 2 on the Nintendo Switch, few would be surprised to see all new Resident Evil games release on the platform too but nothing has been confirmed.

EVIL VR also leaked information about Capcom's plans for Resident Evil back in January, when the leaker said that Resident Evil 8 would not be released before the Resident Evil 3 remake. The leaker confirmed that the game's story would go on from that of Resident Evil 7.

The leaker hasn't said when Resident Evil 8 may be released or officially announced. If the Resident Evil 3 remake is being released first, Capcom will likely hold off on an official Resident Evil 8 reveal. The game may be announced closer to the Xbox Project Scarlett and PS5 release date, EVIL VR had said that the game is in early development so the game may not be ready until after the consoles have launched.

It may be disappointing to fans to learn that they will be unable to play Resident Evil 8 soon, but there are other Resident Evil games to enjoy as they wait. There's the rumored Resident Evil 3 remake and there's also Resident Evil Project Resistance, the multiplayer game that doesn't have an official name yet.

Resident Evil 8 is rumored to be in development for next-generation consoles.
