Right now, fans know next to nothing about the upcoming Resident Evil 8 except that it’s in the planning stages at Capcom. It’s possible that the game has yet to enter full development, and may not even have a director nailed down. If Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi has no interest in directing the game, perhaps Capcom could ask series creator Shinji Mikami to return to the franchise one more time.

While appearing at QuakeCon to promote The Evil Within 2, Mikami was asked if he would direct Resident Evil 8 if Capcom gave him full creative freedom. Mikami gave a noncommittal answer, saying, “I might,” and refraining from going into further detail. Since Mikami currently works for Tango Gameworks and Bethesda, it seems highly unlikely that he will direct Resident Evil 8, but it’s not impossible.

Capcom has a long history of collaborating with other studios and companies, producing a number of crossover video games like the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise and even developing some Legend of Zelda titles for Nintendo. Considering this, it’s not out of the question that Capcom could work out some kind of deal with Bethesda and Tango Gameworks as it has done with other companies in the past.

Of course, one has to take into account that Capcom and Shinji Mikami didn’t exactly split on the best of terms, with Capcom shutting down Clover Studio. However, there have been reports that Capcom has reached out to other former developers at Clover Studio, with talks apparently taking place between Hideki Kamiya from Platinum Games and Resident Evil 7 executive producer Jun Takeuchi. Nothing concrete has been announced from these supposed talks, though rumors indicate that they involved the possibility of Platinum Games developing Okami 2 for Capcom.

With Capcom’s apparent willingness to work with its former employees and Mikami at least open to the idea, there is a chance, however slim, of him directing Resident Evil 8 if asked to do so. However, a more likely scenario is that Mikami will continue to work on projects with Tango Gameworks, where he is now busy serving as producer on The Evil Within 2, and Capcom will entrust the development of Resident Evil 8 with the Resident Evil 7 team.
