Following the Sony's The Future of Gaming digital event, many next-generation titles were announced alongside the reveal of the PlayStation 5, including the long-awaited reveal of Resident Evil 8. It's is a game that many have been looking forward to for years now. While the trailer did a good job of keeping the finer details of Resident Evil 8 a secret, a special message from the developers showcase some of the in-game features.

Based on what was shown in the trailer, the game takes place on a snowy mountain around and inside a medieval castle. A sharp contrast when compared to most other settings in previous Resident Evil games. Given the cryptic nature of the trailer, it's also extremely hard to tell how the overarching story of Resident Evil will apply to Resident Evil 8. Then again, many fans felt the same way about Resident Evil 7 for the longest time.

In any case, after the reveal of Resident Evil 8 at Sony's digital event, the developers of the game came forward and talked about some of the finer details of the game. First and foremost, players will once again assume the role of Ethan Winters, the main protagonist of Resident Evil 7. This info does seem to fall in line with a rumor regarding the playable characters of Resident Evil 8 made a day before the announcement.

The game takes place a few years after the events of Resident Evil 7 and will also be a lot more action-oriented, which might upset the die-hard fans of the survival horror format the earlier games were known for. Resident Evil 8 will also feature a revamped inventory system and will presumably have no load times. That last one seems somewhat hard to believe, but then again, there have been crazier Resident Evil 8 theories.

Finally, a detail that the developers emphasized quite heavily is a piece of key art that features a bird's nest, two black feathers crossing each other, a ring, and a flesh-like object in the middle that's hard to interpret. No one knows for sure what this image is, but it appears to be some kind of crest. Just one more mystery that players will eventually solve.

Overall, fans of Resident Evil have a lot to look forward to in terms of this game. It's safe to assume that the game will have the same presentation as Resident Evil 7, but will also bring a lot of new concepts to the table. With the return of both Chris Redfield and Ethan Winters and with even more exciting news coming soon, this game cannot come fast enough.

Resident Evil 8 is set to launch in 2021.
