Resident Evil 3 just came out, but fans of Capcom's survival-horror franchise are already looking forward to what's next. Rumors have been swirling about Resident Evil 2021 and what it may entail, and while it was originally suggested to be a Resident Evil spin-off as opposed to a main series game, a prominent leaker who has been accurate in the past is now saying that next year's game is in fact Resident Evil 8.

This information comes from AestheticGamer, a Twitter user who has been a reliable source of Resident Evil franchise leaks. Even so, fans should take the information with a grain of salt until Capcom announces something official. According to AestheticGamer, more Resident Evil 8 details will be revealed by someone else later in April, but in the meantime, they have provided some background information on the game.

Apparently, Resident Evil 8 started life as Resident Evil: Revelations 3, and the game that was originally referred to as RE8 is supposedly still years away from release, but will obviously be going by a different name now. As reported by AestheticGamer, Capcom decided to convert Revelations 3 into Resident Evil 8 due to positive internal play testing and a desire to not have such a big gap between the releases of Resident Evil 7 and RE8.

Resident Evil 8 is expected to have another year in development, though it seems as though it's already rather far along. After all, Capcom invited RE Ambassadors to test some unknown game, and it's quite possible that game was Resident Evil 8. In any case, the past leak about Resident Evil 8 having werewolves and RE7 protagonist Ethan exploring a snowy village "are 100% true," but "outdated info," if AestheticGamer is to be believed.

Resident Evil 8 is said to be going through "some huge changes" so that it feels more like a main series Resident Evil game, with changes being made to both the story and characters. The elements of Resident Evil 8 that will make some fans mad is a focus on hallucinations, occultism, and insanity as opposed to the use Resident Evil fare.

Finally, AestheticGamer says that Resident Evil 8 will be a cross-gen game, meaning it will likely launch for PS4 and Xbox One as well as the PS5 and Xbox Series X. With Resident Evil 8 supposedly due out in 2021, hopefully some more official info comes sooner rather than later. It was supposedly set to be announced at E3 2020, so maybe fans won't have to wait too long for an announcement.

Resident Evil 8 is rumored to be in development for current and next-gen consoles.
