Now that it's 2021, the release of Resident Evil 8 is closer than ever. Those that are eager to explore the horrors Capcom has in store for them can show off their excitement by displaying a free Resident Evil 8 avatar from the PlayStation Network. It's available for US users by redeeming a code sent out through social media.

Fans can expect a lot of news on the next installment of the popular horror franchise through next week's Resident Evil showcase. In anticipation of the event, Twitter user Wario64 posted a download code for a free avatar of the woman in the large-brimmed hat seen in the game's trailers. It's available to anyone on the US PSN for both the PS4 and PS5. Not a lot is known about the woman--not even her name--but by the way she's portrayed in available media, she's going to be an antagonist of some sort.

The upcoming Resident Evil 8: Village showcase will likely explore her role and so much more next week, when Capcom has announced it will pull back the curtain on the game another few inches. The show will not only reveal a new trailer but also the first-ever gameplay trailer, allowing fans to see what exploring the titular village will really be like. Capcom also promises plenty of fresh information on the title. This will hopefully include details on the game's story, which can only be gleaned by the various available trailers. A lot about the story is still unclear, such as the role of series regular Chris Redfield and his seeming turn to villainy. Many suspect this is just a red herring, however.

The official press release states that the event will cover more than the new title, but also the franchise as a whole. The length of the Resident Evil event was also disclosed, which should be plenty of time to excite fans of the franchise for what's to come. With the success of the series' remakes over the past few years, Capcom may plan on revealing even more. The Resident Evil series is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, so audiences can expect some big announcements.

One part of the celebration includes a new to-be-named title that will be announced during the showcase. The website for the anniversary is asking people to sign up for a closed beta test for the new Resident Evil game. Registration has already begun, and all that is needed to sign up is a CAPCOM ID. Potential testers have until January 25 to register. According to the site, the beta test will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and will run from January 28 until January 30.

Resident Evil 8 is set to launch in 2021 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
