Some Resident Evil 7 developers discuss the game's enemies, revealing that it will have 'zombie-like' creatures and other humanoids for players to battle.

Based on what we've seen of the game so far, Resident Evil VII is shaping up to be quite the departure from series norms. This has some fans worried that it won't even feel like a true Resident Evil game at all, but Capcom will be taking some measures to make sure Resident Evil VII is unmistakably a Resident Evil game. Capcom's efforts include adding recognizable items for series fans, as well as familiar enemies, with the developers confirming that the game will feature "zombie-like" foes that players will encounter.

"Zombie-like" is a little vague, but it means something that at least somewhat resembles Resident Evil enemies of the past should appear in the new game. It's possible the developers are referring to enemies similar to the Los Ganados or Maijini from Resident Evil 4 and 5, as opposed to the classic, slow-moving zombies that terrified fans of the original games, but that's just speculation at this time.

Resident Evil VII is said to have "other humanoid enemies" in addition to the zombie-like creatures, so it will be interesting to see what else the team cooks up as far as monsters go. While former series stars like Leon S. Kennedy aren't going to be in the game, perhaps Capcom will bring back some of the franchise's past humanoid enemies, such as the Tyrant, for example.

One has to imagine that Capcom is going to allow players to kill the enemies in Resident Evil VII, but we're still not quite sure how combat will work in the game just yet, outside of swinging an axe as seen in the Beginning Hour demo. Fans may not have to wait much longer to get a better idea of what to expect from the game's combat, though, as Capcom's Tokyo Game Show 2016 lineup includes Resident Evil VII, and that event is scheduled to take place later this month.

Even though combat is going to be in the game in some capacity, fans shouldn't expect it to be a focus. Unlike the recent, action-packed Resident Evil games, it looks as though Resident Evil VII will encourage players to hide from enemies as much as possible instead of engaging them in a fight. In fact, the only enemies we've actually seen in the game so far - the deadly Baker family - are seemingly invincible, and there's a chance they may appear quite frequently in the final product.

Combat aside, having some enemies that at least resemble the iconic creatures from the franchise's past should help Resident Evil VII feel more like a genuine Resident Evil game. As we near the game's release next year, expect Capcom to keep revealing more information on the game, including what some of the enemies look like, and how players will be able to defend themselves from them.

Resident Evil VII will be available on January 24th for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR, and Xbox One.
