It's been almost nine months since Resident Evil 7 launched worldwide and the popular horror title has now reached its sales target at long last. According to Capcom, the latest entry in the Resident Evil franchise was meant to achieve 4 million sales by the end of the last fiscal year in March, though this figure has only just been met this month.

A new milestone revealed on the game's official site proudly displays the 4 million sales, though Resident Evil 7 was predicted to have reached this point almost seven months ago. Despite the horror game's resounding success, it seems the title was not able to live up the expectations of its developer.

As of right now, Resident Evil 7 is the fourth most popular game in the long-running series, behind its most recent three predecessors. Of course, while the latest addition to the franchise received a lot of praise, it was still a major departure from the usual style of gameplay. And while this might have made for a more frightening experience in places, it perhaps wasn't the Resident Evil experience that more hardcore fans were searching for.

Back in March, Resident Evil 7 missed the mark by approximately 500,000 sales, meaning that the game has achieved a further half a million since that point. While sales have certainly slowed down since the launch period, the upcoming Gold Edition is sure to raise those figures once more when it launches in the 2017 Holiday season.

Those four million gamers who purchased Resident Evil 7 have been treated rather well by Capcom up to this point, and the developer has released several DLC expansions for those who enjoyed the base game. One of the most recent expansions to be announced has players following returning character Chris Redfield as he and his team hunt down the psychotic Lucas Baker.

What's more, further content entitled End of Zoe is also in production, which is set to bring the story of Zoe Baker to its final conclusion. This downloadable expansion features a new mysterious character who appears to be one last Baker family member, and will be launching alongside Chris Redfield's Not a Hero DLC as well as the Gold Edition of the game.

Resident Evil 7 is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR, and Xbox One.
