As we approach the one week anniversary of Resident Evil 7's launch, new statistics revealed online indicate that the latest iteration in the long-running horror franchise shows a return to form for the series.

This news comes courtesy of GfK Chart-Track which announced that Resident Evil 7 comes in at an impressive third place when it comes to a succesful week one launch in the franchise. Currently Resident Evil 5 still holds the top spot, due in part to the game being the first in the series to launch on a Microsoft platform.

The site also revealed that Resident Evil is the most successful Capcom brand in the UK, something that is reflected in this week's sales charts. Looking at the top ten list, Resident Evil 7 has reached number one, followed closely by Rockstar Games' long-standing Grand Theft Auto 5 in at second place. The full top ten list can be found below.

  1. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
  2. Grand Theft Auto V
  3. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter
  4. FIFA 17
  5. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  6. Rocket League
  7. Battlefield 1
  8. Yakuza 0
  9. Watch Dogs 2
  10. Steep

This impressive launch for Resident Evil shouldn't be surprising to those who have been paying attention to the game's sales figures since release, as the title has already racked up a notable 2.5 million sales as of earlier this week. Capcom should be very happy with the game's performance so far, though the company is sure to be expecting more from Resident Evil 7 over the coming weeks, if its prediction of 4 million day one sales is anything to go by.

Of course, dedicated horror fans may also invest further time and money into the highly-anticipated game, through purchasing of the Resident Evil 7 DLC that is set to release later this month. The bonus content, titled 'Banned Footage', will include two new chapters of the game, including a survival mode where protagonist Ethan must make it through the night as hordes of enemies begin to attack. A hardcore new 'Ethan Must Die' game mode is also included.

The success of the newest Resident Evil game may also be affected by the rise in VR technology, with recent numbers indicating that over 70,000 players are doing so with the PlayStation VR kit. Experiencing the scares that Capcom's latest title has to offer using a VR headset is sure to be quite the terrifying experience, so we'd only recommend it to the bravest of horror-enthusiasts.
